The Great Wildebeest Migration is only a few weeks away, and the herds were recently sighted in Tanzania's Grumeti region, pressing northward toward the Maasai Mara here in Kenya.
While not every safari guest will witness the dramatic river crossings, crocodile attacks, or predator hunts that make headlines, being in the presence of thousands of these wildebeest and zebras congregated on the banks or spread across the open plains of Mara is a wildlife spectacle itself that leaves a lasting impression on even the most seasoned traveller.
Even more amazing is how the entire ecosystem comes alive around them zebras grazing nearby, predators lions, cheetahs, hyenas, lurking in the tall grass, vultures circling overhead and countless other species all responding to the arrival of the herds.
Watching thousands of wildebeest spread across the plains during a sundowner feels like witnessing Africa on a scale that is almost impossible to comprehend until you experience it for yourself.
