| Elephant twin births are exceptionally rare, accounting for fewer than 1% of pregnancies. But we have wonderful news from Kimana Sanctuary, in the Amboseli ecosystem!

A 30yr old elephant named Twain, daughter of Topaz, gave birth to a rare set of twins on 7 October 2026. This marks the sixth recorded set of elephant twins in the Amboseli ecosystem, making it a remarkable moment for Kenya’s elephant conservation story.

She has been an incredibly successful mother, giving birth to five calves since 2009, all of whom are alive today. Now she has had twins, a rare event in elephants.⁠

Not all twins survive in the wild, since two calves must share one mother’s milk and care. With Twain’s experience, and if ecological conditions stay good this year, their chances are strong.⁠

| The curtains are slowly coming down on the great wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara*, and these are some of the final moments of the iconic Mara River crossings.

But the migration is much more than a spectacular wildlife event. It is a cycle of life that sustains the Mara ecosystem. Their presence connects the entire ecosystem, from the grasslands to the predators that depend on them. Without the wildebeest, the Mara would be a very different place.

And while this year's migration gradually draws to a close, the cycle continues. The herds will move south into Tanzania, with the next great migration season in the Maasai Mara expected around July 2027, although the timing depends on rainfall and grazing conditions.

Now is the time to start planning for 2027. Booking early gives you a better chance of securing your preferred camps and lodges, especially those in prime locations near the river crossings, before availability becomes limited.
