MV Doña Paz sinking on the morning of 20th December 1987 in the waters of Philippines remains the worlds deadliest non military maritime accident.The ferry collided with an oil tanker MT Vector that was carrying 1,041 tonnes of gasoline.
The total fatalities was 4,386 people with only 26 rescued from both vessels.The coalition quickly caused a huge fire on both vessels and in the sorrounding waters,combined with no action from Dona Paz crew to coordinate escape for the passengers,they stood no chance of survival.The crew were not in their work stations when the accident happened.
To worsen the situation,the ferry was grossly overloaded carrying over 4,000 people with only 1,493 officially recorded.Interestingly,the owner company of Dona Paz was involved in other 4 deadly shipping accidents in 11years leading to a death toll of around 5,000 people.
