Your ultimate gorilla trekking packing list
The moment is unforgettable: walking quietly through the forest, sunlight filtering through the mist, and then… eye contact. A mountain gorilla, close enough to see every detail, watches you with the calm wisdom of the wild.
But before you experience that magic, there’s one important step:
Packing right!
Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda: What to Pack
Gorilla trekking is a forest hike through varied terrain — you’ll want to dress with flexibility and protection in mind.
• Long‒sleeved shirt (moisture‒wicking) – to protect against sun, insects, and light brush
• Long hiking trousers – to avoid scratches and stinging plants
• Rain jacket or poncho – even in dry season, showers happen
• Fleece or hoodie – mornings are cool, even in the tropics
• Neutral tones – think beige, green, brown
• Avoid camouflage patterns – these are not permitted in some regions due to military association
• Water bottle or hydration pack
• Light snacks (e.g. dried fruit, granola bars, nuts)
• Sunscreen & lip balm with SPF
• Insect repellent
• Camera with silent shutter (flash not permitted)
• Small pack of tissues or wipes
