I plan to scale the mountain our country is named after sometime in March 2019. To build endurance, I have been participating in a series of pre-hikes organised by my expedition planner This past Sunday, thus, in the company of the indefatigable who shot these, we visited 4250.21 ha Ragia Forest that forms part of the Aberdare ecosystem. The forest located in Lari, Kiambu County is accessed from Flyover-Magumu-Njabini road and is managed by Kenya Forest Service.
After forward thinking tree planting and a stretch session with Sasumua Dam painted as a splendid background, the gang cut through bamboo thick following elephant trails. The trail suddenly made a steep drop (in muddy funny conditions) to Sasumua River which led to a magnificent waterfall called No 18. From the waterfall, we took a different trail took us to a cascading waterfall and hideout caves preferred by Mau Mau freedom fighters like Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi and General China. From the waterfall, a calorie munching walk (in the rain) along a forest road concluded what would be a memorable outing!
And oh, we swam in the refreshingly chilly natural pools. You should too...just remember to wear the right shoes and a change of clothes.
