A very interesting and unique sighting in the Masai Mara.

"A few crocodiles were feeding on a zebra that had died earlier during a big river crossing. We noticed a couple of hippos slowly swimmimg towards the carcass and eventually biting and chewing the carcass and even biting the crocodiles on a few occasions.

There could be a few reasons why these hippos acted the way they did. Firstly it could be a territorial thing. Hippas are very territorial in water, and a floating zebra could be seen as an unfair object intruding into their territory.

It could also be scavenging behaviour. Although hippos are mainly graers they have been documented eating meat including carcasses. It could also be that the hippos were after nutrients, possible from the stomach content that they were lacking from their usual diet.

Whatever reason, it was fascinating watching this incredible behaviour."
