It’s that time of year when we start looking forward to migration season. The wildebeest usually arrive in the Maasai Mara around July and August.

This video was filmed with Joe a few years ago at the beginning of the season, when we were lucky enough to witness a river crossing at the Sand River, all to ourselves. It was just a short drive from our base at Leleshwa Camp.

Spotted in Amboseli: lion cubs, lots of them, in more than one pride.

These lionesses have their paws full with these energetic youngsters. Like all cats, cubs learn through play, practising their stalking and pouncing at every opportunity, with plenty of claws and sharp teeth involved.

Keeping up with up to six cubs can be exhausting for any mum!

While our guests are out on safari, we prepare everything for their return. The campfire is ready, but there’s no need to huddle on blankets. We make sure you can share stories, drinks and snacks by the fire in ultimate comfort.

From the striking stripes of the Grevy’s zebra to the mountain gorilla, East Africa is home to some of the world’s most endangered wildlife. African wild dogs, mountain gorillas, and others face growing threats from habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.

Thoughtfully planned tourism plays a critical role in conservation, supporting local communities and funding wildlife protection efforts. Some great examples are Ol Pejeta and Lewa conservancies.

At East Africa Safari Ventures, we work with conservancies and initiatives that protect wildlife and also the ecosystems and people who sustain them. These photos have all been taken while on safari with past guests.

Off we go! It’s hard to pick a favourite part of a safari, and it often varies. Sometimes it’s the moment a guest spots an animal they’ve never seen before, or catches their first glimpse of Mount Kenya or Mount Kilimanjaro.

But one of our favourite moments is setting off on that very first game drive. You can feel the excitement in the vehicle, the sense of anticipation about what lies ahead and what East Africa might reveal around the next corner.

It’s almost always a great moment for us too.

Today, we want to make a special mention of all the incredible people who bring the safari experience to life, the guides who share their knowledge, the chefs who prepare delicious meals in sometimes unconvential settings, the conservation teams protecting the landscapes, and the communities who welcome us.

Their passion, dedication, and hard work make each of our safaris unforgettable. Happy Labour Day from all of us at East Africa Safari Ventures!

Too Cute Tuesday! This photo was taken during a safari to Borana in 2012. These young elephants will be almost fully mature now, and may even have started families of their own.

Bringing you an animal we don’t often feature, the crocodile. Prehistoric in appearance and virtually unchanged for millions of years, these formidable predators are one of the main reasons river crossings during the migration are so perilous for wildebeest and zebra.

Crocodiles can survive without food for weeks, even months, thanks to their slow metabolism. But when prey is plentiful, they become fiercely competitive, often battling over scraps in a thrashing feeding frenzy.
