The taxi operators at Miritini have been left crying kwi kwi after Kenya Railways showed them the middle finger by offering a train from Miritini to Mombasa for only 50 bob.
It will be remembered that these taxi operators used to extort travellers with exorbitant prices for the short trip from Miritini to Mombasa town. Boisterously, they even chased away all the boda bodas near the station so they could remain the only option for commuters.
As the taxis weep, tuk-tuks and matatus in Mombasa town are popping champagnes (or at least cold Cokes), because the train conveniently drops customers right into their hands. Business will be booming where the monopoly once loomed.
It’s poetic justice. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. And in this case, that meat comes with a train whistle, and a Ksh 50 price tag.
To our dear taxi bros: maybe it’s time to innovate, collaborate—or finally accept that not every hustle lasts forever.
