TRAVELLING TO KENYA? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TRAVEL HEALTH INSURANCE

Planning a safari, beach holiday, business trip or any other visit to Kenya? Travel health insurance is now a mandatory requirement for non-Kenyan travellers.

Under the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023 and the latest Gazette Notice No. 11492 dated 30 July 2026, every non-Kenyan entering Kenya for a stay of less than 12 months is required to have valid travel health insurance.

What must the insurance cover?

The prescribed minimum benefit limits are:

• Medical expenses: USD 20,000
• Emergency medical transportation: USD 25,000
• Prescribed medicines: USD 300
• Mental illness: USD 1,000
• Repatriation of mortal remains: USD 5,000

➡️ The combined minimum cover must be at least USD 50,000.

📋 What travellers need to know

✅ If you already have travel health insurance from your country of origin, you may use it, provided it meets the prescribed benefit limits.

✅ Proof of the valid insurance policy will be required as part of the Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) application process.

✅ Travellers who do not have compliant insurance before travelling may obtain the required cover at the point of entry into Kenya from an insurer licensed and approved in Kenya.

✅ Immigration authorities will verify compliance at designated points of entry.

Planning your Kenya holiday? Don’t leave your travel insurance to the last minute. Make sure your policy meets Kenya’s current requirements before you travel.
