We are going ball crazy in the office today! Mwitu Na Watu has donated the balls for an upcoming Football and Volleyball competition the children at Lenkobei Primary School are participating in. We hope they survive the acacia thorns!!

This weekend we made our way to Lenkobei Primary School which is next to Shompole Conservancy.

We dropped off 8 refurbished and 4 new tablets as teaching enhancements which were donated by Mwitu Na Watu. These tablets have been loaded with Hadithi, a literacy app for 6 and 7 year olds that includes stories written by Kenyan teachers and illustrations by East African artists. The stories are read by actors and celebrities such as Caroline Mutoko.

We are proud to announce that Lenkobei Primary School has two new trainee teachers, Joyce and Eunice!

The school has planted a number of Neem trees in the hopes of creating shade. The kids are in charge of keeping the goats and sheep away from these fragile new residents, some going as far as to build near impregnable thorn barriers around their charge.

One of the smaller water tanks was blown away in a strong wind, cracking beyond repair, and another has developed a small leak that will need to be fixed before the rains in April.

Coffee stop at Lake Magadi on our way to Lenkobei Primary School.

The small primary school of has 81 students, currently pre-schoolers, 1st & 2nd graders from the Shompole Maasai community.

The school has not attained government registration, and the teachers’ meager salaries are covered through term fees paid by the parents. Education is free in Kenya but only when the school has been registered. The closest registered school is 20 km away and therefore out of reach of all these children.

In school holidays the teachers also take classes here teaching the Maasai parents to read & write, currently there are around 20 adults taking these classes.

In the last few years we have rebuilt broken desks, renewing the chalk boards, redone floors, installed a solar system for lights and charging of phones and tablets.

We have also installed guttering for rain water collection with about 10000 litres in 3 water tanks and other small improvements such building shelves & tables, as well as providing text books and other learning materials.

We supply food for the all the children and teachers lunches. Every week a Maasai woman from the village volunteers to cook for the school. We believe that learning is better on a full stomach.

African Latitude supports this and several other projects across Kenya.
