Mirror, mirror on the wall… who's got the best self-recognition of them all?

Elephants are among the few animals that have demonstrated the ability to recognise themselves in a mirror.

In a famous 2006 study, researchers placed a large mirror in front of three Asian elephants. One elephant, named Happy, repeatedly touched a mark on her forehead that she could only see in the mirror, suggesting she recognised the reflection as her own! 👀

A lake that looks almost like another planet… but is very much real. 👀🦩

Did you know there's a lake in northern Tanzania with water so alkaline that it can be dangerous to many animals?

Meet Lake Natron.

Its striking red and pink colours come from salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in its extreme conditions. The water can reach temperatures of around 60°C, with alkalinity that makes it extremely harsh for most wildlife.

And here's the surprising part…

Despite these conditions, Lake Natron is one of the world's most important breeding grounds for lesser flamingos. In fact, it supports the breeding of the vast majority of the world's lesser flamingos.

The very conditions that make this lake so challenging for many animals help protect flamingo nesting sites from predators.

So, what looks like an inhospitable landscape is actually a nursery for millions of flamingos. Nature really doesn't do things the way we expect. 😂🦩
