The Great Migration keeps us guessing. 🌍🐃 Back Already?

After moving into the Serengeti, part of the herd is already making its way back towards the Maasai Mara.

And that is exactly what makes the migration so extraordinary.

There is no fixed timetable out here. The wildebeest follow rain, water and fresh grazing, sometimes moving back and forth across this vast ecosystem as conditions change. What looks like a reversal is often simply part of the natural rhythm of the journey.

Beautifully captured by George (GK), one of our Driver Guides of Excellence, this is where experience matters.

Because safari is not only about finding the herd.

It is about understanding what is happening, reading the landscape, and knowing that nature rarely moves according to our expectations.

The wild doesn’t follow our calendar. We follow the wild.

Sometimes, the wild answers back. 🦁🦒✨

On Day 1 of the Nanare Art Challenge, the young participants created team identities, names and flags.

One team called themselves LiSimba, with a proud male lion on their flag.

Another chose Twiga Splash, with a giraffe proudly represented in their design.

Then came Day 2.

Together with Luigi Footprints Foundation, Stand Up Shout Out (SUSO), and Food Fleet, we took the young artists into Nairobi National Park, guided by George Karau (GK), one of our Driver Guides of Excellence.

And somehow, the park seemed to bring their imagination to life.

LiSimba saw a real lion.
Twiga Splash saw a real giraffe.

For some of the young people, it was their first time seeing these animals in the wild.

The creatures they had placed on flags just a day earlier were now standing before them, no longer symbols, but living, breathing wildlife in their natural home.

That is the magic of exposure.

A drawing becomes an encounter.
A team name becomes a memory.
An idea becomes something real.

And with GK guiding the experience, those sightings became opportunities to learn, ask questions, understand behaviour and see why protecting these landscapes matters.

As our Executive Chairman, Annabella has helped shape not only the direction of Maniago, but the spirit in which we travel, host, connect and tell Africa’s stories.

She leads with warmth, instinct, generosity and a deep love for people, wildlife and the extraordinary places we are privileged to share with our guests.

Across the years, she has carried Maniago through countless journeys, partnerships, friendships and adventures, always with that unmistakable energy that makes people feel welcomed, valued and part of the family.

And that is why “matriarch” fits so perfectly.

It speaks not only to leadership, but to heart. To presence. To the person who holds people together while continuing to inspire the next journey.

We have a new baby in the Mara. 🐘✨

Just a mother and her calf.

No big herd. No dramatic moment. Just the two of them moving through the landscape together and somehow that makes it even more special.

On safari, it is often these quiet encounters that stay with you longest.

You notice how close the calf keeps to its mother. How carefully it follows her pace. How much trust can exist in such a simple moment.

Beautifully captured by George (GK), one of our Driver Guides of Excellence, this is the kind of sighting that reminds us why the Mara never feels repetitive.

Some journeys leave you with memories. Others leave footprints. 🎨🌍

At Maniago, we believe the best safaris are not only about where you go, but about the connections you make along the way.

So when one of our guests wanted to share her love of art while in Kenya, we helped turn that intention into a meaningful experience at the SUSO MABINGWA Youth Center in Nairobi.

There, she spent time with young people painting, laughing, creating, and encouraging each of them to bring their own imagination to the canvas. It was joyful, personal and completely different from the traditional safari experience, yet every bit as memorable.

This is part of how Maniago curates travel.

We connect our guests not only to extraordinary wildlife and landscapes, but also to people, communities and opportunities to leave a positive footprint behind.

And then, with colourful masterpieces completed and hearts full, the safari continues, to Amboseli, the Mara and beyond.

Because for us, a truly exceptional journey should do more than show you Africa.

A little sparring on the plains of Amboseli. 🐘

Two bull elephants meet, test each other’s strength, push, lean, and size one another up, but without the intensity of a serious fight.

For male elephants, moments like these are an important part of life. Sparring helps them build confidence, practise strength, read each other’s boundaries, and understand where they stand socially.

It can look dramatic, but often it is closer to a conversation than a battle.

A push.
A response.
A little persistence.
Then space again.

Another fascinating glimpse into the complex social world of elephants, powerful, intelligent, and constantly learning from one another.

Sometimes strength is not about winning.

Sometimes, it is simply about knowing how far to push.

Peaceful neighbours on the Mara River. 🦛🐊

At first glance, hippos and crocodiles seem like unlikely companions.

One is among Africa’s most powerful herbivores. The other is an ancient predator. Yet along riverbanks like this one in the Mara, they can often be found sharing the same water, basking areas and resting spaces with remarkable tolerance.

The reason is beautifully simple: they occupy the same ecosystem, but live very different lives.

Hippos spend much of the day in water to keep cool, emerging mostly at night to graze. Crocodiles use the river as both refuge and hunting ground, often basking along its banks to regulate their body temperature. Because adult hippos are far too large and formidable to be typical crocodile prey, the two species can spend long periods side by side with little reason for conflict.

That does not mean there are never tense moments, especially around young animals, food or limited space, but most of the time, coexistence is exactly what it looks like here:

Quiet. Watchful. Respectful of boundaries.

George (GK), one of our Driver Guides of Excellence, captured this extraordinary scene on the Mara River, hippos and crocodiles simply going about their day as peaceful neighbours.

A reminder that the wild is not always about competition.

Sometimes, it is about knowing how to share the river.

Obama is back and apparently, lunch can wait. 😂🐘

At Elephant Bedroom Camp in Samburu, one of our favourite familiar faces returned to one of his favourite spots: his trusted scratching tree.

First the neck. Then, with absolutely no concern for who might be watching… the bum. 😂

There is something wonderfully humbling about moments like this. One minute you are settling in for lunch, the next a magnificent bull elephant has wandered through camp to take care of a very important itch.

Obama has his routines, his favourite trees, and seemingly perfect timing when it comes to disrupting the lunch hour.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Because this is the magic of Samburu, wild, intimate, unscripted, and always full of character.
