One of Africa’s most elegant birds. And one of Kenya’s most magical sights. 🦩💛

Meet the Grey Crowned Crane — and prepare to fall completely in love.

Here are some of our favourite facts about one of Kenya’s most extraordinary birds 👇

👑 That crown is made of golden bristle feathers. Not soft plumage — actual stiff, golden bristles that radiate outward like a halo. No other bird in the world has anything quite like it.

💃 They dance to fall in love. Crowned cranes are famous for their elaborate courtship displays — bowing, jumping, running, wing-spreading and calling in synchronised pairs. Once bonded, they mate for life. 🥹

🌿 They are the only cranes that roost in trees. Every other crane species sleeps on the ground or in shallow water. Crowned cranes have a unique hind toe that lets them grip branches — making them completely distinctive among the world’s 15 crane species.

🎵 Their call is unmistakable. A deep, resonant honking boom that carries across wetlands and open grasslands. Once you’ve heard it in the wild you never forget it.

📍 In Kenya, you’ll find them in the Rift Valley lakes, the Masai Mara, Amboseli and across the highland grasslands — often in pairs or small family groups, picking through short grass for insects, seeds and small reptiles.

⚠️ But they need our help. The Grey Crowned Crane is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Habitat loss, wetland drainage, pesticide use and the illegal pet trade have reduced their population significantly. In some parts of East Africa, numbers have fallen by over 80% in recent decades.

They are the national bird of Uganda, beloved across East Africa, and one of the most beautiful creatures the continent has ever produced. 💛

A new half-life in South Africa means a whole new adventure for us! 🇿🇦 With the help of our wonderful partners, we've already found some incredible hidden gems that suit our adventurous but stylishly fussy family to a T.

Boring but important 🤓mandatory local travel insurance.

Zanzibar introduced it back in 2024. Tanzania then introduced it … and Kenya has now also introduced it effective immediately.

Whilst for Zanzibar and Tanzania - its one or the other. For Kenya its a standalone and is a pre requisite when you apply for your eTA.

🚨 Important Update for Kenyan Travelers!

Effective October 5, 2026, the Kenyan government requires all foreign visitors to purchase mandatory local travel insurance directly through the official eTA system.

⚠️ Please note: Even if you already have international travel insurance, purchasing this specific local policy is now a mandatory prerequisite to complete your eTA application.

Adults: $44.00 USD (+ $1.00 processing fee)
Minors: $22.00 USD (+ $1.00 processing fee)
Group applications remain possible, but the insurance fee applies individually.
