Fun Fact about a Lion
1. Lions are the only truly social big cats. They live in groups called prides, which can include up to 30 lions depending on food and territory availability.
2. A lion’s roar can be heard from about 8 kilometers (5 miles) away. They use roaring to communicate, defend territory, and locate pride members.
3. Male lions spend up to 20 hours a day resting or sleeping. Despite being called the “king of the jungle,” lions conserve energy whenever possible.
4. Lionesses do most of the hunting. They work together as a team to catch prey such as zebras, wildebeests, and buffaloes.
5. Cubs are born with spotted coats. The spots help camouflage them when they are young, and some faint markings can remain into adulthood.
