ITINERARY

The small town of Watamu is located in the Kenyan Northern Coast, and south of Malindi town. It is at the centre of a strip of idyllic tropical beaches offering one a range of world class resorts and quiet relaxing hideaways. It is fronted by wide white beaches. This tranquil haven is home to several well established resorts, and many private guesthouses scattered through the forest along the deserted shore.

At Watamu, a Marine National Park has been established, an ideal day trip for divers and snorkelers alike.

There are so many things you can do while in Watamu, that enjoying a relaxing lie-on-the-beach holiday can be difficult!

Exceptional snorkeling and diving conditions in Watamu Marine National Park allow all visitors easy access to the spectacular undersea life. Whether a newcomer to the sea, or an experienced diver, you’ll be able to find some exciting things to do.

The beach is ideal for long walks, especially at low tide, when you can see some more of the marine life in the exposed rock pools that are scattered along the shore. Several companies provide deep sea fishing, and Watamu is renowned for its fishing competitions and events.

Away from the beach and sea is Mida Creek, where you can go for boat and dhow trips and some hotels will arrange these activities for you. A guided tour of a local Giriama village can be arranged.

Slightly further afield is Gede, 11 kms from Watamu. Gede is a National Museum, Gede Ruins. These 12th Century Swahili ruins are little documented and it is mere speculation about the town’s origins and history.

The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is another unique place to visit near Watamu. It is one of the largest stretches of Brachystegia woodland on the eastern African coast, and has no less than six endangered species of bird, 3 of them endemic to the forest, as well as the little known Golden Rumped Elephant Shrew, a giant shrew that has only been identified in a couple of locations in East Africa.

1. At Hell’s Gate you will enjoy walking safaris, and even families with young energetic children can take part in a walk in the wild alongside zebra, eland, gazelle and giraffe.

2. And if you don’t fancy walking, you can hire a bike at the gate of the park and enjoy a ride in the wild.

3. Camping facilities are available within the park so it’s a wonderful place for you to pitch up tent under the dazzling Kenyan night sky.

4. You will see African buffaloes, zebras, elands, hartebeests, Thomson’s gazelles, baboons and over 100 bird species including vultures, Verreaux’s eagles, augur buzzards and swifts. Rare lammergeier vultures, as well as the Chandler’s mountain reedbuck and the klipspringer antelope also call the park home.

5. Amazing scenery will surround you thanks to Fischer’s Tower, the Central Tower, and the park’s gorge. Fischer’s Tower came to be as a result of volcanic activity that occurred 35 million years ago. It was later named after a German explorer named Gustav Fischer, and it is now one of the park’s many popular rock climbing sites.

6. At the end of the day 1800 hrs, you will depart from Naivasha back to the city.
