Hippos have their own natural way of protecting their skin from the sun.

Their skin produces a reddish-orange secretion made up of compounds that help absorb ultraviolet radiation and protect against sun damage. It also has antibacterial properties, giving this remarkable substance more than one purpose.

Often mistaken for blood, this unusual secretion is one of the many adaptations that help hippos spend long hours exposed to the harsh African sun.
