Michael Jordan was born in 1963, in the slums of Brooklyn, New York.

He had four siblings and his father's earnings were not sufficient to provide for the whole family.

He grew up in a poor neighbourhood. Exposed to mindless violence and heavy discrimination in the slums, he saw for himself only a hopeless future.

His father saw in Michael, a lost soul and decided to do something.

He gave Michael, who was 13 years old, a piece of used clothing and asked: "What do you think the value of this outfit would be?"

Jordan replied,"Maybe one dollar."

His father asked, "Can you sell it for two dollars? If you can sell it, it would mean that you are a big help to your family."

Jordan nodded his head, "I'll try, but no guarantee that I'll be successful."

Jordan carefully washed the cloth clean. Because they didn't have an iron, to smoothen the cloth, he levelled it with a clothes brush on a flat board, then kept it in the sun to dry. The next day, he brought the clothes to a crowded underground station. After offering it for more than six hours. Jordan finally managed to sell it for $2. He took the two dollar bill and ran home.

After that, everyday he looked for used clothing, washed and ironed it, and sold it in the crowd.

More than ten days later, his father again gave him a piece of used clothing, "Can you think of a way you can sell this for 20 bucks?"

Aghast, Jordan said, "How is it possible? This outfit can only fetch two dollars at the most."

His father replied, "Why don't you try it first? There might be a way."

After breaking his head for a few hours, finally, Jordan got an idea.

He asked for cousin's helpto paint a picture of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse on the garment. Then he tried to sell it in the school where the children of the rich study.

Soon a housekeeper, who was there to pick his master, bought that outfit for his master. The master was a little boy of only 10 years. He loved it so much and he gave a five dollar tip. 25 dollars was a huge amount for Jordan, the equivalent of a month's salary of his father.

When he got home, his father gave him yet another piece of used clothing, "Are you able to resell it at a price of 200 dollars?" Jordan's eyes lit up.

This time, Jordan accepted the clothes without the slightest doubt. Two months later a popular movie actress from the movie "Charlie's Angels", Farah Fawcett came to New York for her Movie promos. After the press conference, Jordan made his way through the security forces to reach the side of Farah Fawcett and requested her autograph on the piece of clothing. When Fawcett saw this innocent child asking for her autograph, she gladly signed it.

Jordan was shouting very excitedly, "This is a jersey signed by Miss Farah Fawcett, the selling price is 200 dollars!" He auctioned off the clothes, to a businessman for a price of 1,200 dollars!

Upon returning home, his father broke into TEARS and said, "I am amazed that you did it My child! You're really great! "

That night, Jordan slept alongside his father. His father said, "Son, in your experience selling these three pieces of clothing, what did you learn about success?"

Jordan replied, "Where there's a will, there's a way."

His father nodded his head, then shook his head, "What you say is not entirely wrong! But that was not my intention. I just wanted to show you that a piece of used clothing which is worth only a dollar can also be increased in value, Then how about us - living & thinking humans? We may be darker and poorer, but what if we CAN increase our VALUE."

This thought enlightened young Jordan. Even a piece of used clothing could be made dignified, then why not me? There is absolutely no reason to underestimate myself.

From then on, Michael Jordan felt that his future would be beautiful and full of hope.

He went on to become the greatest basketball player of all times.

How can I increase my own value? I am finding it a very interesting thought. I am sure, you too, will.

This is a hard piece to write because discretion is a critical attribute of leadership. However there are things that must be made public.

I get all manner of messages via phone, documents dropped at my office, twitter, Facebook, emails and face to face. These come from a variety of sources including whistleblowers, active citizens and intelligence officers. I try to follow up on most issues raised. The messages are sometimes overwhelming but I do my best to offer the appropriate response or refer them to the right person. I have achieved much because of this discretion.

Earlier this year l received an email that was different. l didn't believe its source, therefore the first person l told about it was my wife. I asked her to guess the author of my surprise letter. Since l had already received a letter from Obama, she guessed, “Uhuru?” Her first guess was correct. When I replied in the affirmative, she said, “No way!” As usual l thought it was a hoax. Nonetheless, I tried to verify the email address through various avenues and confirmed its authenticity.

The email read in part... "It is with keen interest I take note of your courage and patriotism in this great country of ours. It is through you the youth that our country can change for the better. I have been fighting the cartels, drug barons and the land-grabbers left, right and centre. Now it is up to you to change the narrative. Publicly I have tried but I would like to support your efforts in this fight against corruption.”

For a second I was wowed; maybe he means what he says about fighting corruption. Reality then kicked in. This government’s track record with fighting corruption is terrible. In October l received a message from a high-level government insider exposing the rot within the government and the corruption cover-ups. Another person who said he works for National Intelligence Service, told me of how senior jubilee politicians have hired hackers to steal money from the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS). The man said that sharing this information could get him killed. I also got a call from a Member of Parliament reporting land grabbing and a friend of the President, who even has his personal number, called with a land problem.

Every single day l get at least 50 messages from strangers asking for help on issues ranging from land grabbing, domestic violence, police harassment, corruption, etc. The government says the right things but their actions speak differently. Kenyans have to rely on fellow private citizens for guidance and help. I am tired of the complaints. I am tired of the mafia. It seems the mafia have full control now and we are at their mercy.

Other countries have Mafia, in Kenya, the Mafia have a country. President Uhuru has mentioned them. Raila Odinga has spoken about them. They are in every sector and are feared even by the highest office in the land. They call the shots both in government and in the opposition. Their projects are included in the national and county budgets. They decide the cost of everything and bankroll politicians in order to influence policies and tender allocations. They decide how MPs vote on important motions. My comrade, W***y Mutunga, who served in the judiciary summed it up well when he said, “The influence of the cartels is overwhelming…If we do not fight the cartels, we become their slaves. But leaders who do take on the cartels must be prepared to be killed or exiled.”

President Uhuru, It is time for decisive, focused and disciplined leadership. The next 8 months is critical in Kenya’s future. Do not be afraid of making unpopular decisions.
As the key representative of the people of Kenya you have to lead this fight. You have to name, shame and purge your government of these cartels. It should not matter how close they are to you or they have done for you in the present or the past. It should not matter what tribe they are or whether they are related to you. They must be arrested and prosecuted.

Mr. President you cannot claim you don’t have enough powers to fight corruption while the party you control enjoys a majority in parliament. You have used that majority to pass law and get your public appointments approvals. Use the tyranny of numbers to clean the system.

You asked for my support to fight corruption and l would like to let you know that 44 million Kenyans are all tired of corruption. They will support you if you walk the talk. I do admit that you have said the right things in the fight against corruption and the Kenyan Mafia but your actions have yielded very little results. Our jails are still full of petty offenders while key economic saboteurs walk free.
By fighting corruption you will lose a few corrupt allies but win an entire nation.

As Kenyans we must make corruption expensive. Anyone accused of stealing our money should not be re-elected. The government may not prosecute the thieves but as Ory Okolloh says, “We the people can send them to social jails.” Don’t sit with them. Don’t drink with them. Avoid their company. Make them a pariah. Corruption is infectious and the corrupt should be avoided at all costs. In 2017, we need to have a people's uprising. We have to stop electing thieves to power. We have to stop taking bribes for votes. Fellow Kenyans, our fate in 2017 and beyond lies in the power of our vote and we ought to exercise it. From 16th January-15th February 2017 there will be a nationwide voter registration. Register to vote. Remember, bad leaders are elected by good citizens who don’t vote.

Lets have a ballot revolution. It’s possible!
