Pawpaw is one of the fastest-maturing and most profitable fruit trees for Kenyan farmers. But to get the best results, it's important to understand the different varieties, how they look, their level of sweetness, and where they grow best. Choosing the right variety can significantly boost your yields and market value.

1. The Solo/Solo Sunrise (Hawaiian) variety produces small to medium round fruits with reddish-orange flesh. It is very sweet and soft, making it perfect for home use, juices, and premium markets. This variety thrives in warm lowland and mid-altitude areas with well-drained soils.

2. Another favourite among farmers is the Red Royal/Red Lady hybrid. It gives medium to large deep-orange fruits that are sweet, juicy, and aromatic. It matures early and produces high yields, which is why it is widely preferred for commercial farming. Red Lady does well in most warm to moderately warm regions across the country.

3. Farmers in colder, high-altitude areas can consider Mountain Pawpaw, which produces small yellow-orange fruits with a flavourful, slightly less sweet taste. Though not as sugary as lowland varieties, mountain pawpaw is excellent for jam, juice, and value addition. It is specially adapted to cooler climates where other pawpaw varieties fail.

4. Malkia is a well-known local pawpaw variety grown across many parts of Kenya. It produces medium to large fruits with yellow-orange flesh and a pleasantly sweet taste. The fruits are slightly elongated and have a smooth texture when ripe. Farmers like Malkia because it is hardy, adaptable, and performs well in a wide range of climates from warm lowlands to mid-altitude regions.

Generally, pawpaws mature within 8โ€“12 months, provided they are planted in well-drained, fertile soils and receive moderate rainfall or irrigation. They are easy to manage, require minimal space, and have ready markets ranging from supermarkets and hotels to roadside vendors and juice processors.

We have ready-to-plant seedlings for all the varieties at KShs. 100. We are located along the Embu-Nairobi highway at Kwa Samaki, near Sagana Gateway. Delivery services available countrywide. Contact 0712 075915 / 0721234815 or email [email protected] to order.

Jabuticaba is one of the strangest, most eye-catching fruit trees you'll ever come across โ€” instead of growing on branches like nearly every other fruit, its dark purple, grape-like berries sprout directly from the trunk itself, clustering along the bark in a way that looks almost otherworldly. Originally from Brazil, the fruit has a sweet, slightly tangy flavor often compared to a cross between a grape and a lychee, and is eaten fresh, juiced, or turned into jams and wine.

This is a tree for patient farmers. Jabuticaba is naturally slow-growing, and grafted trees typically take around 4 to 8 years to begin fruiting โ€” a longer wait than most fruit trees, but one that pays off with a truly unique, high-value crop that's still virtually unknown in Kenyan markets. It thrives in humid, subtropical conditions with acidic, well-drained, organically rich soil, and once established, a mature tree can produce multiple harvests per year for decades.

Because of its novelty and rarity, jabuticaba tends to fetch premium prices wherever it's sold โ€” a genuine conversation piece as much as a crop.

Jabuticaba seedlings are available at KShs. 1,000. Find us along the Embu-Nairobi highway, at Kwa Samaki, near Sagana Gateway โ€” we deliver countrywide and ship worldwide. Call/WhatsApp 0712 075915 / 0721234815 or email [email protected] for orders or any agronomic assistance

Mango farming remains one of the most important fruit production enterprises in Kenya. The crop is widely grown across many regions and contributes significantly to both household income and the national fruit market. While traditional varieties dominate many orchards, interest in premium mango varieties is steadily increasing as farmers explore higher-value opportunities.

There's a reason tangerines disappear fastest from any fruit bowl โ€” small, bright, and genuinely impossible to resist. A close relative of the mandarin, they're known for their loose, easy-peel skin, deep orange color, and a sweet-tangy flavor that's gentler than a regular orange but still full of citrusy punch.

That ease of peeling is exactly what makes them such a popular snack โ€” no knife, no mess, just peel and eat, which is part of why they're such a hit with kids and busy adults alike.

The trees themselves are relatively compact, making them a practical fit for both small farms and home gardens where space is limited. They establish quickly and begin fruiting sooner than many other citrus varieties, typically within 2 to 3 years of planting, and reward growers with generous, reliable harvests once mature.

For spacing, trees are usually planted about 12โ€“15ft apart, giving an acre roughly 200โ€“300 trees depending on exact spacing chosen. They do best in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 5.5โ€“7.0) and thrive at moderate altitudes, making much of Central Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley well suited to them.

We have tangerine seedlings ready for transplanting at KShs. 150. Find us along the Embu-Nairobi highway, at Kwa Samaki, near Sagana Gateway โ€” we deliver countrywide and ship worldwide. Call/WhatsApp 0712 075915 / 0721234815 or email [email protected] for orders or any agronomic assistance.

Intercropping is one of the most practical ways to make better use of limited farmland. Instead of growing a single crop across the entire field, a farmer grows two or more crops together, either at the same time or with carefully planned differences in planting dates.
