The serval (Leptailurus serval) is a wild small cat native to Africa. It is widespread in sub-saharan countries, where it inhabits grasslands, wetlands, moorlands and bamboo thickets. Across its range, it occurs in protected areas, and hunting it is either prohibited or regulated in range countries.

Baraka, died at 31 years.
As the first black rhino born within the Ol pajeta conservancy, Baraka faced challenges early on, losing an eye during a territorial dispute. When cataracts later developed in his remaining eye, the Ol Pejeta team took proactive measures by relocating him to a secure enclosure, where he received the care and respect that he rightfully earned.

Baraka served as an invaluable ambassador for black rhinos within the conservancy, allowing countless visitors to engage with and understand this remarkable and endangered species. We know that this loss will be profoundly felt by his dedicated caretakers.

The name Baraka translates to “blessing” in Swahili, and he embodied this sentiment for all who had the privilege of meeting him.

Rest in peace, cherished Baraka.
