While hyenas have earned a reputation as opportunistic scavengers, they are actually skilled endurance hunters that secure over half of their own meals. In this video, a hyena takes stealth to a whole new level by creeping up on a resting topi antelope, proving that even apex predators appreciate a good shortcut. The topi, entirely oblivious to the lurking threat, appears to be enjoying a peaceful afternoon snooze in the grass until the hyena delivers the ultimate, non-negotiable wake-up call.

​What follows is a chaotic game of tag that the topi definitely did not sign up for. Despite a valiant effort to shake off its persistent pursuer, the antelope quickly learns that hyenas don't just scavenge leftovers. They are relentless, formidably strong, and exceptionally persistent. Before long, other clan members join in on the action to seal the deal, proving that in the savanna, taking a nap in broad daylight is a luxury best reserved for creatures at the very top of the food chain.

Every year, driven by a relentless urge for fresh pastures, hundreds of thousands of wildebeests and zebras plunge into the churning, treacherous waters of the Mara River. The air fills with a thunderous roar of splashing water and frantic calls as herds hurl themselves down steep banks, moving as a frantic, unified tide. Bound by instinct and sheer momentum, the animals struggle through swirling rapids and slippery rocks, desperately striving to reach the safety of the opposite shore.

​Beneath the river's surface, ancient apex predators lie in wait for this annual feast. Massive Nile crocodiles slice through the froth with terrifying speed, striking into the chaotic herd to drag down prey in a fierce struggle of survival. While many make it across to continue their journey across the vast savannah, others fall to the river's gauntlet, marking this breathtaking crossing as one of nature’s most dramatic and raw spectacles of life and death.

There he sat, right in the center of the muddy puddle like a oversized, angry bath toy that nobody asked for. The lone hyena had clearly decided that high ground was overrated, opting instead for deep mud as his fortress of solitude. Surrounding the perimeter was a rowdy gang of African wild dogs, darting back and forth like overactive toddlers who just discovered splash zones. Every time a dog dared to test the water, the hyena unleashed a theatrical, high-pitched squawk, snapping his jaws with the precise energy of someone desperately trying to protect their last clean towel.

​The wild dogs, thoroughly unimpressed by his operatic protestations, continued their chaotic dance around the muddy moat. One adventurous pup would make a feint, prompting a dramatic splash and an outraged roar from the resident swamp creature, who refused to budge an inch. It was less of a fierce territorial battle and more of a classic schoolyard standoff, featuring one very dramatic hyena doing his best impression of an angry guard dog in a giant bowl of chocolate pudding.

Last week, under the watchful, snow-dusted peaks of Mount Kenya, the vast savannah of Ol Pejeta unfolded like a masterpiece of the wild. The plains hummed with life as brilliant, iridescent birds darted through the acacia branches, their songs accompanying us as we tracked the magnificent wildlife. We watched in awe as prehistoric-looking black and white rhinos grazed peacefully, their powerful silhouettes anchored against the horizon. Nearby, the striking, narrow-striped patterns of rare Grevy's zebras stood out sharply against the golden grasses, a testament to the fragile beauty preserved within this unique sanctuary.

​As the day shifted, the bush revealed its raw, untamed drama: a pride of lions resting in the amber light, and a glimpse of a solitary, elusive leopard draped elegantly in the shadows of a riverine tree. The perfect finale awaited us at Kicheche Laikipia Camp, nestled in the heart of the conservancy. With the sky painted in bruised purples, fiery oranges, and soft pinks, we toasted to the day's encounters with a breathtaking sundowner, the gentle breeze carrying the quiet magic of Laikipia as night began to fall.

WHY I LIVE

You brutally torture me and scatter my bits in pits.
My pale skeleton, painted with ash and dust and mud, mingle with pigs.
I struggle to cover my nudity, with dirty dull rags, as old as gold!
Routinely awaiting, to rampage your stale meals, in the cold.

I dread your itchy witchy fingers, which tattoo my skin so thin-painfully!
And your luring snares, intriguingly heart melting as Calypso, offered freely but gainfully.
Cry songs of regrets and reminiscence, disguised as caressing lulls of death, blind us not to see!
For your intents are nurtured by glut, to own so many as waters of the sea.

Unwillingly, I long for the nights, evasive of the truth, that light unveils.
I am a spirit suppressed; hiding purposefully, for my destiny never fails!
Cocooned in my cage, you are, so scared, and I know time heals,
For my eggs would hatch, and you’ll take to heels.

For your heart long cursed, is to stir into wars,
Feasting free on my flesh,but never for the souls, invisible!
For I am fortified, with shields and armours of love, invincible.

Talk about a winner-takes-all game of tug-of-war where the prize isn't a dusty old rope, but a very substantial, very dead eland! In one corner, we have the neighbourhood hyena crew, cackling like a bunch of frantic shoppers at a Black Friday sale, trying to sneak a bite or pull the prize away. In the other, a young lioness who looks utterly exhausted by the sheer audacity of it all, having to repeatedly swat away these spotted freelancers who clearly didn't get the memo about respecting the chain of custody. Meanwhile, the male lion is just casually lying there, acting less like the King of the Jungle and more like a tired dad who parked himself on the couch and refused to move, leaving the heavy lifting and home defense entirely up to his partner.

Nothing gives these top predators a hard hunting task than the Cape buffalo 🐃 🦁!!

In the heart of the African savanna, the African buffalo stands as a monolithic symbol of sheer resilience, routinely defying even the continent’s ultimate apex predator: the lion. Far from being passive prey, these formidable bovines possess a ferocious protective instinct and an unyielding spirit, using their massive, sweeping horns and immense physical power to aggressively counter attacks. When a vulnerable calf is targeted, a mother buffalo,often backed by the collective force of the herd, will fiercely charge, ramming, tossing, and trampling lions with relentless determination. This dramatic display of raw power and untamed courage proves that in the unforgiving wild, the hunter can quickly become the hunted.
