‎📢 Important Update for South Sudanese and Sudanese Applying for U.S. Nonimmigrant Visas

‎As a South Sudanese or Sudanese national, you must take this new U.S. policy very seriously. In the migration sector, every small detail counts.

‎The United States Department of State announced, with effect from September 6, 2025:

‎ “Nonimmigrant visa applicants should schedule their visa interview appointments in their country of nationality or residence. Nationals of countries where the U.S. is not conducting routine nonimmigrant visa operations must apply at a designated U.S. embassy or consulate, unless they reside elsewhere.”

‎So, what has changed?
‎Previously, many applicants could choose to apply in other countries where interview wait times were shorter. That option is now restricted. From now on, you must apply either in your country of residence or in a designated country. Only a few countries fall under this category, including South Sudan and Sudan.

‎What does this mean to you?
‎👉 If you are applying outside your country of nationality, you must provide proof of legal residence in that country.
‎👉 If you are South Sudanese, your designated application location is Nairobi, Kenya.
‎👉 If you are Sudanese, your designated location is Cairo, Egypt.

‎⚠️ Be cautious about what agents tell you. Always seek advice from licensed professionals and follow updates on official U.S. government websites. Remember, visa fees are non-refundable and cannot be transferred.

Refugee Pathways to Germany: Family Reunification

For many refugees, Germany offers protection, safety, and a chance to rebuild life. Beyond visas and humanitarian programs, one of the most important pathways is family reunification, the opportunity to be together with loved ones after displacement.

Visa and Entry Requirements
In general, anyone who wishes to travel to Germany requires a visa. This must be applied for at the German diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) in the country of residence before entering Germany.

Special Pathways for Refugees
Refugees benefit from specific procedures such as:

Resettlement programmes
Humanitarian admission programmes

These can also include family members, depending on the program.

Family Reunification: A Critical Step
If you are recognized as a refugee in Germany, you may apply to bring certain family members to join you.

Important Deadline: You must apply for family reunification within 3 months of being granted refugee status in Germany. Missing this deadline can have serious consequences for your application.

According to UNHCR:

“The protection of family unity is an important human right. If you were separated from your family before or during your flight, you may apply for them to join you in Germany, under specific conditions. Whether your family can join you ultimately depends on the type of legal status you are granted and the nature of your relationship.”
It is strongly recommended to seek individual counselling and assistance during this process, as requirements may differ depending on your situation.
