🥾 3 Things to Consider When Choosing a Hiking Boot

The right hiking boot won't just make your trek more comfortable. It can protect you from injury and help you go farther with confidence.

1️⃣ Fit Comes First Your boot should feel snug without being tight. Your toes need room to move, while your heel should stay locked in place to reduce friction and prevent blisters. Always fit your boots while wearing your hiking socks.

2️⃣ Match the Terrain Different trails demand different boots. • 🌿 Day hikes: Lightweight hiking shoes or mid-cut boots. • ⛰️ Mountain trails: Mid or high-cut boots with added support. • 🪨 Rocky or rugged terrain: Durable boots with excellent ankle support and aggressive tread.

3️⃣ Grip & Weather Protection Choose boots with deep-lug outsoles for reliable traction on mud, loose gravel, and rock. If you expect wet conditions, waterproof yet breathable boots will keep your feet dry without overheating.

🌿 Veld Trails Tip: Never take brand-new boots on a major hike. Break them in during shorter walks to avoid discomfort on the trail.

Wilderness First Aid isn't about being a medic. It's about knowing what to do before help arrives.
The question is simple: If an emergency happened on your next adventure, would your group know what to do... or just watch?

Some people say they’re “trekking” but they’re on a 4-hour Ngong Hills hike with snacks from Quickmart and a playlist louder than the birds. 😂🎒
And honestly? That still counts as a great day outdoors.

🌲 Think you'd survive in the wild? These beginner mistakes could end your adventure before it even begins.

The wilderness doesn't forgive poor decisions. Fortunately, most survival mistakes are completely avoidable.

Here are 7 common mistakes beginners make:

❌ 1. Overpacking or Underpacking
Bringing unnecessary gear slows you down, while forgetting essentials like water, a first aid kit, or a headlamp can become dangerous.

💧 2. Not Carrying Enough Water
Dehydration affects your energy, judgment, and endurance much faster than most people realize.

📍 3. Depending Only on Your Phone
Batteries die. Signals disappear. Always have a map, compass, or offline navigation backup.

🌦️ 4. Ignoring the Weather Forecast
A sunny morning can quickly become a cold, rainy afternoon. Dress in layers and always carry waterproof protection.

🚶 5. Leaving the Trail Without a Plan
Taking shortcuts may seem tempting, but it's one of the fastest ways to get lost. Stay on marked trails whenever possible.

🔥 6. Underestimating Nature
Wildlife, steep terrain, changing weather, and darkness can turn a simple hike into an emergency. Respect the environment at all times.

📢 7. Hiking Without Telling Anyone
Always let someone know where you're going, your planned route, and when you expect to return.

🌿 Remember: Survival isn't about being fearless. It's about being prepared.

🥾 Hiking Etiquette: Respect the Trail. Respect Others. Respect Nature.

A great hiker isn't measured by how fast they reach the summit, but by the impact they leave behind. Every trail is shared with fellow adventurers, wildlife, and future explorers.

Here are a few simple rules every hiker should live by:

🌿 Leave No Trace
Carry out everything you carry in. If you brought it, take it back.

🚶 Stay on Marked Trails
Creating shortcuts damages vegetation and increases erosion.

👋 Be Courteous
A smile, a greeting, or a quick "Morning!" goes a long way. The trail is a community.

⛰️ Yield the Right of Way
Uphill hikers usually have priority because restarting on a steep incline takes more effort.

🔊 Keep Noise to a Minimum
Nature has its own soundtrack. Let everyone enjoy it.

🐘 Respect Wildlife
Observe from a safe distance. Never feed or chase wild animals.

💧 Come Prepared
Carry enough water, snacks, appropriate clothing, and a basic first aid kit. Being prepared protects both you and those around you.

🔥 Protect the Environment
Only light fires where they're permitted, and make sure they're completely extinguished before you leave.

Every responsible step helps preserve Kenya's incredible trails for generations of adventurers to come.

The mountain doesn't remember who reached the summit first. It remembers who cared enough to protect it.
