Did you know male hippos sometimes mark their territory by spinning their tails while… well… spraying dung in every direction? 😂

This behaviour is mainly used to mark territory and show dominance. A dominant male may then have greater access to females, so while it is linked to mating, it is probably not the romantic display you imagined!

This is just one of the many unusual, funny and completely unforgettable animal behaviours you may witness on an African safari. You never quite know what nature has planned, and that’s all part of the adventure!

When the locals drop by during your rest stop… 🐒😂

During their full-day game drive through Amboseli National Park, our American guests took a well-earned break at beautiful Ol Tukai Lodge.

Time to relax, enjoy the surroundings, share a few laughs.

Safari days are not only about the animals you see on the game drive. Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when you simply stop and take it all in and reflect on what you have seen so far on the day.

Mombasa in half a day—history, culture and a local lunch by the sea! 🌊🦐

Our current guests enjoyed a half-day tour of Mombasa, visiting some of the city’s best-known sights, including:

• The famous Mombasa elephant tusks
• Fort Jesus (steeped in history)
• The narrow streets and historic buildings of Old Town
• The colourful local spice and food markets
• The Old Port and harbour area
• Local craft and woodcarving displays

After taking in the history, culture and busy atmosphere of the city, they finished their tour with lunch beside the sea at the Old Port, sampling beautiful local cuisine and enjoying the coastal views.

Jet lag? What jet lag? 🇺🇸✈️🇰🇪

After arriving in Mombasa from America, our guests settled into their accommodation in beautiful Diani Beach, surely ready for a long sleep!

But the very next day, they were smiling and heading off to explore Mombasa on a city tour. We are not sure whether it was excitement, determination or a very strong cup of Kenyan coffee keeping them going! 😂

Their first taste of Kenya included the sights, history, culture and unmistakable character of Mombasa, and, of course, a photo at the famous tusks.

Some friendships are simply meant to travel the world. 🌍✈️
Four years ago, I met the lovely Maribeth Wooldridge-King and her husband, Dan, while cruising down the Rhine River in Europe. We connected instantly and had such a wonderful time together with my sister and her husband.

Who would have imagined that four years later, they would be arriving in Kenya tonight to enjoy a 13-day safari with Surprise Tours & Safaris Ltd. and visit Umoja Orphanage Kenya?

I’m so excited to meet them in Nairobi when they return from the Maasai Mara late July, and welcome them to this very special part of the world.

From a chance meeting on a river in Europe to an African safari and a visit to Umoja, this is what travel, friendship and beautiful memories are all about.
