Krolan: A favorite local snack!

Krolan, or bamboo sticky rice, is one of the most popular local snacks in Cambodia. It is made of sticky rice, coconut milk, sugar, and a pinch of salt. The mixture is packed into bamboo tubes and cooked over a fire for two hours, giving the snack a delicious, savory taste combined with the richness of the coconut milk.

When talking about legacy, we often look at it as the resources that our ancestors or families have left for us as the new generation.

We call ourselves experience creators. We see everything that travelers experience—from history and ruined temples to the culture and natural resources around us—as part of a legacy. Often, when we speak of legacy, we lean toward the idea that we own it or that it exists solely for us. Because of this, we sometimes fall into the direct or indirect exploitation of these resources.

Village experience from one of our previous tours. We visited our friend Hour and his family, who love hosting rice farming experiences.

We went through a brief overview of the rice farming process, with Hour preparing a sample rice field to demonstrate the muddy soil and guide us step by step from rice threshing to pounding.

From this experience we learned how to separate rice grains from the husk using traditional methods.

If we talk about Khmer architecture, we usually think about wood and stone. Traditional Khmer buildings were built on stilts using wooden structures. We can see this in everything from the King’s palaces in ancient times to local houses and pagodas.

In the early 1900s, the Khmer architectural style began to change and upgrade toward a modern look. This was the time when cement was introduced. Cement became a "modern stone," which was likely considered similar to the sandstone used in ancient temple construction.

If we look at pagodas built in the early 1900s, specially in Battambang, we can see that the wooden structure is still there, but the outside is covered in cement. This is one of the unique styles of the 1900s. Buildings were built with a wooden structure to keep the traditional spirit, while cement was used for decoration and to protect the wooden material inside.

When we travel, we often search for things to do, activities to fill the itinerary, places to check off, and experiences to complete just because we have the time. But sometimes, this way of traveling can leave us exhausted. Activities without intention, or simply done to fill silence, rarely feel fulfilling.

It was our honor to welcome the Koun Khmer homecoming experience group to Battambang. This was an immersive village experience, connecting with local daily life and farming activities. Thank you to Selarati Tour for allowing us to host your group in Battambang.

We started with a motor tour to Don Teav village, followed by a visit to Hour’s family, who hosted us and shared their knowledge of rice farming. We also had lunch together with Hour’s family.

Battambang was not directly governed by the French during the early period of French colonial rule. Instead, this exceptional region was administered by a powerful local family known as the Apaiyavong family. The story of this family helped shape Battambang into one of the most unique cities in Cambodia.

By joining our City Walk Tour, you will explore the deeper history of Battambang, stories that are rarely told online.
