In Cambodia, the Irrawaddy dolphin is the most notable species. These dolphins are primarily found in the Mekong River, particularly in the stretch between Kratie and the Lao border. The Irrawaddy dolphin is known for its distinctive appearance, with a rounded head and a small dorsal fin.
Here are some key points about the Irrawaddy dolphins in Cambodia:
• Habitat: They inhabit both freshwater and marine environments, but in Cambodia, they are found in the freshwater sections of the Mekong River.
• Population: The population of Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong River is critically endangered. As of early 2025, there are about 108 individuals remaining.
• Conservation: Efforts are ongoing to protect these dolphins, including monitoring and habitat preservation. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and local authorities are actively involved in these efforts.
• Best Time to See Them: The dry season, from November to February, is the best time to see these dolphins in Kratie, as the waters are calmer.
The Irrawaddy dolphins are a symbol of the Mekong River’s biodiversity and are crucial to the local ecosystem. If you ever get a chance to visit Kratie, it’s a wonderful experience to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Preah Ko is one of the temples in the Roluos Group, located near the town of Roluos, about 12-13 km east of Siem Reap. It was built in the late 9th century by King Indravarman I and is dedicated to his ancestors. The name “Preah Ko” translates to “Sacred Bull,” and the temple is named after the three sandstone statues of Nandi, the sacred bull of Shiva, that stand in front of the central towers.
The temple consists of six brick towers arranged in two rows of three, each adorned with intricate carvings and inscriptions. The central towers are dedicated to male ancestors, while the smaller towers are dedicated to female ancestors. The architectural style of Preah Ko is known as “Preah Ko style,” characterized by its detailed and elaborate carvings.
Preah Ko is part of the larger Roluos Group, which also includes Bakong, Lolei, and Prei Monti temples. These temples are significant as they represent the early stages of Khmer temple architecture and were part of the ancient city of Hariharalaya, the first capital of the Khmer Empire.

Kbal Spean site is an Angkorian-era archaeological site located on the southwest slopes of the Kulen Hills in Banteay Srei District, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. It is often referred to as the “River of a Thousand Lingas” due to the numerous carvings of lingas (symbols of the Hindu god Shiva) along a 150-meter stretch of the Stung Kbal Spean River.

• King: The site was developed during the reign of King Suryavarman I and later expanded under King Udayadityavarman II.

Kulen Mountain, located about 50 kilometers from Siem Reap, is a significant historical and natural site in Cambodia. It’s known for its stunning waterfall and sacred temples.
Kulen Mountain Waterfall
The waterfall is one of the main attractions of Phnom Kulen National Park. It features two tiers:
1. Upper Tier: A smaller fall that cascades into a shallow pool, perfect for a refreshing dip.
2. Lower Tier: A larger and more powerful fall that creates a deep pool, ideal for swimming, especially during the wet season when the water flow is at its peak.
Temples on Kulen Mountain
Phnom Kulen is also home to several sacred sites:
• Preah Ang Thom: This pagoda houses a giant reclining Buddha statue, which is carved directly into a sandstone boulder. It’s a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists.
• Thousand Lingas: Located at Kbal Spean, this site features numerous lingas (ph***ic symbols) carved into the riverbed, believed to bless the water flowing over them.
Phnom Kulen is not only a place of natural beauty but also a site of great historical importance. It was here that King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java in 802 CE, marking the beginning of the Khmer Empire.

The carving of Apsara
The Apsara dancers of Angkor Wat temple are truly fascinating. At Angkor Wat alone, there are over 1,800 Apsara carvings. These celestial dancers are intricately carved into the temple walls, showcasing their elegance and grace.
In terms of styles, the Apsara dance is known for its beautifully designed costumes and headpieces, which are based on the carvings at Angkor Wat. The dance is performed by groups of five or seven females, each adorned in silk draping known as Sampot Sarabap and accessorized with shimmering golden headdresses, bracelets, and anklets.
The dance itself is a significant part of Cambodian culture, symbolizing the paragon of feminine beauty, elegance, and refinement. It’s a beautiful blend of art and mythology, reflecting the rich heritage of the Khmer Empire.

Banteay Srei temple, also known as the "Citadel of Women" or the "Pink Temple," is a 10th-century Cambodian temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Located in Banteay Srei District, Siem Reap Province, it is about 25 km northeast of the main Angkor temple complex.
Banteay Srei is renowned for its intricate carvings and detailed artwork, which are considered some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art. The temple is built largely of red sandstone, which allows for elaborate decorative wall carvings that are still well-preserved today. Unlike many other Angkorian temples, Banteay Srei was not constructed by a king but by two courtiers, Yajnavaraha and Vishnukumara.
It's a popular destination for visitors due to its unique beauty and historical sign.
