ANGKOR THOM

This name means "Great Capital" and refers to the capital of the Khmer Empire that began in the 12th century, under King Jayavarman VII reign. The city is surrounded by a wall and wide moat. Five monumental gates allow entry into it. With a surface of 9 square kilometers, it contains a royal palace and a series of temples.

After his coronation in 1182 AD, King Jayavarman VII fortified his capital-city of Angkor Thom with high laterite twelve-kilometer walls, pierced by five imposing gates, known as ANGKOR THOM GATES. There is one gate at each cardinal direction except the East which has two. Four-faced structure on the top, the celestial three-headed elephant, image of a standing Lokeshvara on the pediments on each side of the gates and two rows of stone gods and demons holding a snake on each side of the causeway make the scene breathtaking.

Built between 1113 and 1150 by Suryavarman II as his state temple and capital city, Angkor Wat is, with its 200 hectares area, one of the largest religious monuments ever constructed. Its name means “temple city.” The most celebrated of all Cambodian´s monuments is considered to be the symbol of the nation and its silhouette appears in the national flag. This pinnacle of classical fine art was originally dedicated to the god Vishnu. In the 16th century, it started to become a significant pilgrimage site for both domestic and international adherents of Buddhism.
Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple-mountain and the later galleried temple. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometers long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the center of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples oriented to the East, Angkor Wat is oriented to the West. Scholars are divided as to the significance of this.
The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of its architecture, extensive bas-reliefs and in particular the Churning of the Ocean of the Milk, and for the numerous devatas adorning its walls.

Built of blue sandstone, this powerful temple is for some parts in chaotic state with collapsed towers and galleries but for that it is very romantic.

Srah Srang (Khmer: ស្រះស្រង់) is a baray or reservoir at Angkor, Cambodia, located south of the East Baray and east of Banteay Kdei.

History
It was dug in the mid-10th century, by initiative of Kavindrarimathana, Buddhist minister of Rajendravarman II.[1] It was later modified around the year 1200 by Jayavarman VII,[2]:125 who also added the laterite landing-stage at its western side, probably because theEast Baray had been overwhelmed by sediment and had begun malfunctioning.[3] French archeological expeditions have found anecropolis close to it.

The site
At present Srah Srang measures 700 by 350 m and is still partially flooded. As other barays, maybe there was a temple standing on an artificial island in the middle of it, as suggested by finding of a basement. The landing-stage, opposite the entrance to Banteay Kdei, is a popular site for viewing the sunrise. It is cruciform, flanked by nāga balaustrades which end with the upright head of a serpent, mounted by a garuda with its wings unfurled. The steps that lead down to the water are flanked by two guardian lions.
A 1600 sq. meter cemetery was discovered at the north-west corner of the reservoir. Mortuary jars containing cremated remains and other artifacts dating from the reign of Udayadityavarman II were excavated by B.P. Groslier.
