Colby Visits Angkor Wat During Cambodia Trip

SIEM REAP, August 16, 2026 — During his visit to Cambodia, U.S. Under Secretary of War Elbridge Colby visited the Angkor Archaeological Park, highlighting what Washington described as mutual respect for sovereignty and cultural heritage as foundations of the U.S.-Cambodia relationship.

The United States said the visit underscored its continued commitment to supporting Cambodia's cultural heritage and preserving the country's historic sites.

Washington also reaffirmed its longstanding support through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, which has provided assistance over several decades to help restore and preserve historic and cultural sites across Cambodia.

The visit comes as Cambodia and the United States continue to strengthen bilateral ties, including cooperation in the defense, cultural and heritage sectors.

The U.S. statement emphasized that cultural preservation remains an important area of partnership between the two countries, with American support contributing to efforts to protect Cambodia's historic heritage for future generations.

The message from Washington was clear: respect for Cambodia's sovereignty and its cultural heritage remains an important part of the bilateral relationship.

✨ Ever seen a stone carving come to life? ✨

Walk through the grand galleries of Angkor Wat, and you’ll see over 1,800 celestial maidens etched into the sandstone walls. But in the theaters of Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, those ancient carvings step off the stone and onto the stage.

This is Robam Apsara—Cambodia’s legendary classical dance. 🇰🇭💃
It’s far more than a performance. In ancient mythology, Apsaras were divine nymphs born from the ocean, serving as sacred messengers between Heaven and Earth. Every fluid movement and impossibly arched hand gesture (Mudra) tells a story—from the sprouting of a leaf to the blooming of a flower and the turn of the seasons. 🌿🌸

Having survived near-extinction during the country's darkest historical eras, the Apsara dance was lovingly restored by surviving master artists and is now recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of human heritage.

Seeing the golden crowns glint under the stage lights as the Pinpeat orchestra plays is an unforgettable experience on any trip to Cambodia.
