Neak Poan, one of Angkor’s most unique and symbolic temples. Built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, Neak Poan is not just a temple, but an ancient healing sanctuary. Neak Poan was designed as a spiritual hospital, inspired by Hindu and Buddhist beliefs in the balance of the four elements—Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind. The temple sits on an artificial island in the middle of a large reservoir called Jayatataka Baray, symbolizing the mythical lake Anavatapta from the Himalayas, believed to have healing waters.
