Food Feature - Biscuits & Gravy

This popular southern dish holds a special place in Americans hearts nation wide. Most commonly served as a breakfast item, you can find this hearty meal served in almost every home-style diner/restaurant, even outside of the southern areas of the US!

We are talking about the American version of biscuits, small baked goods with a soft, crumbly interior, similar to a European scone. Known as a comfort food, this dish is made up of soft, flaky biscuits, covered in either a sawmill, or meat based white gravy. It is simple but delicious and highly effective in filling stomachs and warming hearts.

Sawmill gravy is made with cornmeal, bacon drippings, milk and seasonings. Meat based gravy's are made using drippings from pork sausage, white flour, milk and often bits of sausage, bacon, beef or other meat. While both gravy's are relatively similar in taste profile, they each have their own specific consistencies. Pair with a hearty side of breakfast potatoes, or fresh fruit and an egg and you are starting your day the right way!

While it isn't the most photogenic breakfast out there, the camera really doesn't do this dish justice. Next time you are in the US and looking for a little bit of comfort food, or just something delicious and warm to keep you full, try Biscuits and Gravy (and let us know what you think)!

< Nanta Show Tickets Seoul >

While in Korea, take the opportunity to see the longest running show in Korean history - NANTA. Since the show began in 1997, it has wow'ed its viewers with it's delightful art form of non-verbal and physical theatre.

The show feature acrobatics, comedy, magic and miming! As well as the display of traditional Korean samulnori music. Samulnori is a genre of percussion instruments where samul means "four objects" and nori means to "play". Nanta uses their kitchen utensils and equipment to create unique music throughout the show.

Follow three chefs as they hastily try to finish the food prep for a large wedding banquet when their manager decides to throw his inexperienced and useless nephew in to assist them. What could go wrong?

This show is a perfect opportunity for foreigners to witness live theatre in Seoul because the show is non-verbal so there is no language barrier!

With two private theatres in both Hongdae and Myeongdong, it is very easy to get tickets to see the show while you are in Seoul. Nanta also has theatres on Jeju Island, Bangkok, and even toured around the world for a bit in the early 2000's.

Do you like both sweet and savory foods? Try an authentic Korean dish called Japchae (잡채)!

Made with stir-fried glass noodles and vegetables, this will be sure to send your taste buds through the roof.

Japchae made its first appearance in Korean cuisine as a royal dish back in the 17th century for King Gwanghaegun's palace banquet. He enjoyed it so much that it became a staple item in royal court cuisine. These days it is a popular dish to be served on special occasions, holidays and even at large events. Two of the most common events Japchae is served at is "dol" first birthday celebration, and "hwangap" sixtieth birthday celebration.

Right in the heart of downtown Hongdae, Seoul, there is this adorable little cafe that serves a variety of delicious coffee drinks and desserts in a welcoming atmosphere with natural plants, twinkly lights, adorable decor, and.... SHEEP!

That's right, Hongdae has its very own Sheep Cafe where you can interact with two lovely sheep named Tom and Jerry. Downtown in a bustling city is the last place you would think to find sheep, but they seem to be very content with their current setup and lots of adoring fans!

Customers are asked to purchase food/drink items first before heading out to the sheep pen, but there is no order minimum, and the prices are relatively fair! Item menus include both hot and iced coffee and tea beverages, desert items like honey bread, bingsu, decadent homemade waffles, and so much more! Once you have placed your order, you are allowed to play with and interact with the sheep all you want. We recommended that you try going to this cafe on a weekday vs. a weekend, as the space is small and intimate. If you would like to have a good opportunity to get a seat and a chance to take a sheep selfie, weekdays are the time to go!

This cafe has all menu options written in English as well, making ordering a breeze for foreigners!

The cafe is open every day from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm, and is easy to get to from Hongik University Station (Line 2) Exit 9!
