길상사. Where spirituality, nature, and history come together. Gilsangsa Temple, in northern Seoul, was originally an upscale geisha restaurant in the 70s and 80s. It was owned by Kim Younghan, who decided to donate the property to the venerable monk, Beop Jeong, in 1997, after she became familiar with his writing on non-possession. The temple is neatly tucked away in the trees near Bugak Mountain. Definitely worth a visit!

Yongjoo temple, an hour south of Seoul, was built in the late 18th century by Joseon Dynasty King Jeongjo in memory of his father, prince Sado, who was killed by his own father. King Jeongjo ordered his father’s tomb to be built in Hwasan, the home of yongjoo temple. The night before the completion of the temple compound, the king dreamed of a dragon flying with a magic pearl in its mouth. So, he named the temple “Yongjoo temple”, which literally means “dragon jewel temple”. Jeongjo initiated the construction of Yongjoo temple because he was influenced by the idea of parental respect in the Buddhist Sutras that he read.
