We are busy preparing for the approaching Hurricane Beryl, which is projected to pass just south of the Cayman Islands as a category 3 hurricane - so we could feel hurricane 1-2 force winds, or preferably as low as tropical storm. We want the storm to keep pushing southward away from us.
Our priority for the horses is to remove anything from their surroundings that could become a projectile and turn them out to pasture. The risks of tying them up or isolating them in stalls is too high, as they will be trapped and unable to move out of harm's way should a building collapse or a tree fall, etc.
We found this to be the best option during Hurricane Ivan, which was a cat 5 direct hit. The horses instinctively huddle together as a herd, with their tails to the wind and can flee when needed. We didn't lose any horses during that powerful storm.
We appreciate your concern, prayers, well wishes and good thoughts as we prepare to receive this hurricane. We have no control, so we are at peace with what's to come and can only do our best to prepare ourselves.
