Where was our favorite stop on the river cruise?

This is one of the most common questions we're getting about our Budapest to Amsterdam journey with Emerald.

For me, I loved the smaller towns. In Durnstein and Miltenberg we pulled up right across the street from the historic center and could hike from port up to a castle on the hill!

DIY navigation skills really open up the possibilities so we didn't have to wait for a guided activity to start exploring.

We took detailed notes about all the port locations, timings and attractions on included tours, wifi speeds, and more - stay tuned for blog and video updates with that info you're doing this route in the future!

Here are a few more photos from the last days of our river cruise in Cologne and Amsterdam (we had a significant drop in temperature)!

We enjoyed this trip immensely and are thankful we got to share it with a special group of people.
Anyone want to go with us on the next one??
After over a decade of nomad/DIY travel, we're loving this chance to take a break from trip planning, celebrate a special family birthday, and experience Central Europe with a group of family and friends.

Despite scattered showers and a cold snap moving in, we probably took more pictures on this day than any other - this is just a sampling.

We visited Rudesheim in the morning and Koblenz in the evening, with an incredible afternoon sailing past castles on the Rhine.

We also tried the special flaming Rudesheimer Coffee (actually, we ordered hot chocolate), made in front of us with with sugar cubes caramelized by brandy and fire.

Have you noticed how many days it takes to truly relax on a vacation? I think it was day 5 or 6 when the rest of the world felt more distant and I was better able to immerse in the here and now.

It was a gift to reach one week and still have more to go! Here are pics from the smaller towns on days 10 and 11 of our itinerary. Looking back, it's incredible how much we saw and experienced without having to repack!

Take a walk with us up to the fortress at Wurzburg!

We spotted it at breakfast as our ship was docking across the river and decided to find our way up to the top during our free time before the included city tour.

We stumbled upon a side entrance with a sign for something like a "wine route", which was a path winding through the hillside vineyards on the way up to the fortress itself. 10 out of 10 recommend if you're ever in Wurzburg!

Yesterday I shared photos from shipboard life and the locks on the river. Today let's get back to our sightseeing stops in Nuremburg and Bamburg, Germany.

We have lots of thoughts and tips to share from our first river cruise (soon), but for now: more photos!

We're passing through locks day and night now, as we continue through Germany on the Main river. I've really appreciated the balance of sightseeing in towns with relaxing on the ship while watching the world go by!

Here are some photos from shipboard life this week. Do you want to see our room pics, too?

More photos from our first river cruise!
We have now entered Germany - but it was a close call!

River levels are low in one particular section right now. We've heard that some other cruises have not been able to pass, requiring passengers to transfer ships/spend nights in a hotel/travel by coach. Both high and low water levels are known to interrupt river voyages. Fortunately for us, Emerald emptied the pool to reduce weight and shifted some timings slightly in one port, and we made it through successfully.

Our first riverside castle sighting was on day 2 while checking out a family member's balcony room. Then we got to explore Bratislava and did a countryside home visit in Slovakia, which was better than expected - with cake, coffee, and a full wine tasting from a local hobby winemaker!
