A five-day cultural exhibition celebrating Lao traditional knowledge, craftsmanship, creativity, and cultural identity will take place in Vientiane this September.

Visitors can explore six cultural experience zones, discover traditional arts and crafts, shop for authentic products directly from local artisans and communities, and join hands-on workshops featuring skills such as weaving, natural dyeing, basketry, woodcarving, pottery, traditional cuisine, herbal knowledge, music, dance, and more.

The programme will also feature cultural performances, fashion, Lao cuisine, coffee, tea, wellness activities, and Business Matching sessions connecting artisans, producers, entrepreneurs, buyers, and markets.

Boun Khao Padabdin – A Sacred Tradition of Remembrance in Laos 🇱🇦
Held during the eighth lunar month, Boun Khao Padabdin is an important Lao Buddhist tradition honoring departed ancestors, bringing families and communities together through traditional rituals, offerings and acts of merit-making.
The name “Padabdin” reflects the tradition of placing offerings on the earth. In the early morning, around 4:00 to 5:00 a.m., families prepare khao tom – sticky rice wrapped in banana or lotus leaves – along with fruits and other foods. Some offerings are brought to temples for monks, while others are placed around the home, including by the stairs, spirit house, rice storehouse and gate, so that ancestral spirits may receive them.
Temple courtyards come alive with a warm and reverent atmosphere, as monks chant, locals gather in quiet prayer, and younger generations learn the importance of family, tradition and respect. After the ceremonies, families often come together to share meals and stories, strengthening the bonds between generations.
The festival is also a time to pay respect to Mae Thoranii, the Earth Goddess, highlighting the close connection between spirituality, nature and everyday life in Lao tradition.
