This cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka.

The Buddhist mural paintings (covering an area of 2,100 m2 ) are of particular importance, as are the 157 statues.

Built at the base of a 150m-high (490ft) rock, the golden temple of Dambulla is one of Sri Lanka’s greatest hidden wonders that has stood since the 1st century BC and later inhabited by Buddhist monks since the 3rd century BC.

All of this history has made the Dambulla Cave Temple the important religious site that it is today and is a UNESCO World Heritage making it only one of eight in Sri Lanka
