Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and historically known as Ceylon, is an island country in South Asia located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bay of Bengal. It is separated from India by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait and shares maritime borders with the Maldives, India, and Myanmar. The country has two capitals: Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (legislative) and Colombo (administrative and judicial), with Colombo being the largest city and the political, financial, and cultural center. Kandy is the second-largest city and the last native kingdom's capital
Sri Lanka has a population of about 22 million, with the Sinhalese as the majority and Tamils as the largest minority. The main languages are Sinhala and Tamil. The country has a rich cultural heritage influenced by Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam, with a history dating back to the 6th century BCE. It gained independence from British rule in 1948 and is a member of the Commonwealth and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.
The government is a democratic republic with a semi-presidential system, featuring an executive president, a unicameral parliament, and an independent judiciary. The president is the head of state and government, elected for a five-year term, with a two-term limit. The political landscape has seen significant events including a civil war ending in 2009, a severe economic crisis starting in 2019, and recent political changes with the election of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in 2024.
Sri Lanka is known for its scenic diversity, cultural richness, and tourism appeal, offering beaches, ancient ruins, wildlife, tea plantations, and vibrant local cuisine[2][8].
