*Stilt Fishing – History and Background* 🐟🇱🇰

Stilt fishing
(known locally as *“Ritipanna”*) is a *traditional fishing method*
unique to *Sri Lanka’s southern coast*, mainly seen in *Koggala, Ahangama, and Weligama*.

🕰️ History

Originated around World War II (1940s)
During the war, food shortages and limited access to boats pushed local fishermen to find *creative methods* to fish in shallow waters.

Fishermen started using *shipwrecks and debris* as platforms to fish from the sea.
Later, they planted *wooden poles* in the coral reef and sand, and tied crossbars to sit on while casting their lines.

Passed down through generations, it became part of *Sri Lankan coastal heritage*.

🎣 Why It’s Unique

Fishermen sit *2 meters above water* on narrow poles for hours.
They fish with *simple rods and bait*, mostly catching *small reef fish* like mackerel and spotted herring

📸 Today

Fewer people rely on it as a livelihood due to modern fishing methods.
Many now do *demonstrations for tourists*, keeping the tradition alive.
It's one of the *most photographed cultural scenes* in Sri Lanka.

Nine Arch Bridge – Ella 🇱🇰

The *Nine Arch Bridge*, also known as the *"Bridge in the Sky,"* is a famous colonial-era railway bridge located between *Ella and Demodara*.

- *Built in 1921* during the British colonial period

- Made of *stone, brick, and cement* – *no steel* used in construction

- Designed by *Ceylonese engineer P. K. Appuhami*, with British supervision

- Stretches *91 meters long* and *24 meters high*

- Supported by *9 elegant arches*, surrounded by lush jungle and tea plantations

Interesting Fact:
Legend says when World War I broke out, imported steel was reallocated for war needs, so the locals completed the bridge using only stone and cement.

Today, it’s a top tourist attraction — especially beautiful when a train passes across it!

The True Story of Lovers' Leap Waterfall
Location: Hawa Eliya, Nuwara Eliya

Located just 2 km from Nuwara Eliya town, Lovers' Leap Waterfall is a stunning natural attraction that carries both scenic beauty and a tragic love story. Nestled near Hawa Eliya on the Udupussellawa Road, it’s accessible via a small uphill road and staircase. On the way, you’ll also see a water collection pool, as the waterfall supplies drinking water to the area.

Fed by the Pidurutalagala Mountain—Sri Lanka’s highest peak—this 30-meter-high waterfall is surrounded by lush vegetation and tea plantations. While the hike is pleasant during the dry season, it can be slippery and leech-infested in the rains.

The Legend:
Long ago, a royal prince fell in love with a beautiful village girl. The king disapproved due to caste differences and sent soldiers to separate them. The lovers fled and climbed to the top of this very waterfall. Cornered and with no escape, they leapt to their deaths—hence the name *Lovers’ Leap*.

Locals still warn against visiting late in the evening, citing eerie occurrences.

From the base, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Nuwara Eliya town. You’ll also spot historical landmarks like the former brewery of Samuel Baker (now the hospital) and the tea fields planted by James Taylor.

This place isn’t just about romance and history—it’s a vital ecosystem. Let’s all do our part to preserve its beauty and biodiversity.
