The Maduganga river is a shallow water body in south-west Sri Lanka. Madu Ganga is one of the most important natural assets of Sri Lanka. It opens to the Indian Ocean Madu lagoon is a very wide and a beautiful lagoon in sri lanka. “Madu Ganga” is located 80 kilometres from Colombo in Balapitiya Main road. The estuary of the Madu Ganga river is a complex coastal ecosystem of mangroves and islands. It may be one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests in Sri Lanka. The water runs through a course of land that span of 2300 hectares that was declares as a national sanctuary in 2006.

Madu Ganga is the second largest wetland in the island, there are around 64 islands in the river and lagoon. Along with the smaller Randombe Lake, to which it is connected by two narrow channels, it forms the Madu Ganga wetland. Its estuary and the many mangrove islets on it form a complex coastal wetland ecosystem. It has a high value in ecological, biological and aesthetic significance, home to 303 species of plants belonging to 95 families and to 248 species of vertebrates.Maduwa island connected to the mainland with a very long footbridge
