Sigiriya (also called Lion Rock) is one of the most famous historical sites in Sri Lanka. It’s a massive rock fortress rising about 200 meters above the surrounding jungle and plains.
🏰 What is Sigiriya?
* Built in the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa I
* Served as a royal palace and fortress
* Later became a Buddhist monastery
🌿 What you can see there
* Lion’s Gate – the entrance shaped like a giant lion (only paws remain today)
* Sigiriya Frescoes – ancient paintings of beautiful women (cloud maidens)
* Mirror Wall – polished wall with ancient writings (graffiti)
* Water Gardens – advanced irrigation system still working today
* Summit Ruins – remains of the king’s palace on top of the rock
🧗♂️ Climbing Sigiriya
* Around 1,200 steps to reach the top
* Takes about 1.5 to 2 hours (up and down)
* Best time: early morning or evening (to avoid heat)
