🌍🐘 WORLD ELEPHANT DAY 2026 🐘🌍
Today, we celebrate the world’s three elephant species — the African Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana), African Forest Elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis), and Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus). There are 4 subspecies of the Asian Elephant -
*Sri Lankan Elephant (Elephas maximus maximus)
*Indian Elephant (Elephas maximus indicus)
*Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus Sumatranus)
*Borneo Elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis)
Our own Sri Lankan Elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is highly threatened in the country. A recent estimate cited 7451 wild elephants, but most of them live outside protected areas, resulting in frequent clashes with humans. Each year, many elephants (and humans) die due to the Human Elephant Conflict in Sri Lanka. So, it’s a reminder of what we stand to lose.
Only around 415,000 African Elephants remain in Africa (some say 450,000 or more), while fewer than 52,000 Asian Elephants survive across Asia. Their forests and migration routes are under increasing pressure from human activity.
On World Elephant Day, let’s remember that protecting elephants means protecting the ecosystems they help shape, and the future of our planet.
