The Veddhas are among Sri Lanka’s oldest indigenous communities, traditionally tracing their origins to the era of King Vijaya and Queen Kuveni. Their name is linked to the Sanskrit word for “hunter” or “one who pierces.” Historical writers such as Robert Knox and R. L. Spittel documented their appearance, lifestyle and social groups, including Rock, Village and Coastal Veddhas.🌿

Traditionally dependent on hunting, gathering and forest resources, the Veddhas maintained a close relationship with nature. Although many have since integrated with Sinhalese and Tamil communities, elements of their cultural heritage, including ancestral practices such as the worship of Nae Yaku, continue to survive.🪶
