Yala National Park closed on 1 September and reopens 15 October.
Every year, as the dry season ends and the rains begin to return, Yala shuts its gates. Wildlife disperses deeper into the park in search of water, and the land gets six weeks to breathe; no vehicles, no visitors, just the park restoring itself.
For the well-planned traveller, this is not bad news. It is information. September is the height of the Elephant Gathering at Minneriya, the swimming elephants are out at Gal Oya National Park, and Bundala's flamingos are arriving on the southern coast.
