🛕 Sri Dalada Maligawa – The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic 🛕

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, Sri Lanka, is one of the most revered Buddhist sites in the world, enshrining the left tooth of Gautama Buddha. This magnificent temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, attracts thousands of local and international devotees and travelers daily.

🏛️ A Symbol of Spiritual and Cultural Heritage 🏛️
The temple’s unique Kandyan architecture, adorned with intricate carvings of gold, silver, bronze, and ivory, reflects the deep cultural significance of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Surrounded by historical landmarks, including the ancient Royal Palace, Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, and the Kandy Lake (Kiri Muhuda), the temple stands as a symbol of devotion and tradition.

📜 A Journey Through History 📜
The Sacred Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamala and Prince Dantha from the Kingdom of Kalinga, India, during the reign of King Keerthi Sri Meghavarna (301–328 AD). It was safeguarded in various royal capitals—Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa, Kurunegala, Kotte, and Gampola—before finding its final resting place in Kandy, where it remains the most sacred shrine for Buddhists worldwide.

🏯 Evolution of the Dalada Madura 🏯

King Wimaladharmasuriya I (1592–1604) built the first temple in Kandy.
Destroyed by the Portuguese, it was rebuilt by King Rajasinghe II (1635–1687) but later burned by the Dutch.
King Wimaladharmasuriya II (1687) constructed a three-story structure, which decayed over time.
King Sri Veera Parakrama Narendrasinghe (1707–1739) built the two-story temple seen today.
King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe beautifully renovated it, and King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe (1798–1815) added the iconic Paththirippuwa (Octagonal Pavilion).
🙏 A Living Legacy 🙏
Even today, the Mahanayake Theros of Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters and the Diyawadana Nilame ensure that centuries-old rituals are carried out without interruption, preserving the sanctity of this sacred site.
