I just started a job at Chipotle and today was my first real shift. They sent me to the back to wash dishes and I walked into what looked like the aftermath of a food war. Sinks full, racks full, containers stacked everywhere, sauce bottles, pans, bowls, lids, trays — literally a mountain of dishes like somebody had been saving them all day waiting for the new person to show up. I stood there for a second thinking there is absolutely no way they expect one person, on day one, to magically erase an entire shift’s worth of mess by themselves.

Then the manager basically tells me if I don’t finish it, I can be sent home and probably replaced. That’s what really got me. Not training. Not helping. Not easing somebody in. Just straight to pressure and threats over a dish pit that looked like it had its own zip code. Doing your part is one thing, but dumping the work of an entire crew onto somebody brand new and acting like that’s normal is crazy to me. Places wonder why nobody stays, why people quit, why workers look drained after two shifts.

Maybe because some of these jobs don’t hire employees, they hire shock absorbers for everybody else’s laziness.
