Rising from the sacred heart of ancient Polonnaruwa, the Lankatilaka Image House was built in the 12th century by King Parakramabahu I and remains one of the city’s most striking architectural achievements.
Once home to a towering standing Buddha, its massive brick walls and soaring structure still hint at the scale and spiritual ambition of Sri Lanka’s medieval golden age. Even in ruins, Lankatilaka carries a quiet grandeur, reminding visitors that devotion here was once built to touch the skies.
