POLONNARUWA
Polonnaruwa 216 km (134 miles) from Colombo offer a rich history, Polonnaruwa is the 2 nd capital of Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura. During the rule of Kiny Parakrama Bahu (1153-1186) Polonnaruwa reached its zenith. The kind erected huge buildings, planned beautiful parks and a crowning achievement was the construction of a 25 sq. km tank which he named Parakrama Samudra (Sea of Parakrama). In 1982 UNESCO added the ancient city of Polonnaruwa to its world heritage sites.
Amongst the many archaeological sites in Polonnaruwa perhaps the Gal Vihara stands out a the rock carving consist a group of beautiful images which mark the high point of Sinhalese rock carving. The Gal Vihara consist of 4 separate images all cut from one long slab of granite.
