ST.BENEDICT'S MONASTERY, ADISHAM

A four km drive from Haputale will lead you to Adisham, a monastery run by Benedictine Monks. Wrapped in the tranquility of the misty hills, Adisham Bungalow attracts every eye that falls on it. The pages of history reveal that the creator of this enthralling place is Sir Thomas Lister Villiers. Sir Thomas Lister Villiers was born in 1869 in Adisham, an ancient village which lies in the hollow of the Kent country side. He was the son of Reverend Prebendary Henry Montegu Villiers who belonged to Clarendon family and his mother was Lady Victoria Russell the daughter of (Grandfather of Sir Thomas Lister Villiers) who was twice the prime minister of Britain (1846 – 52, & 1865 – 66). As leader of the Whig party, he was most responsible for changing its name to the Liberal Party.

HISTORY OF YAPAHUWA
In the early 13th century Yapahuwa was the capital of the country and it housed the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha for 11 Years. King Bhuvanekabhu I, the son of the King Parakramabahu who at that time ruled Dambadeniya, was stationed at Yapahuwa in order to protect the Country from Invaders; built the palace and the temple. After the Fortress was abandoned monks converted it into a monastery and monks still reside among the ancient ruins. Even today signs of early defense mechanisms can still be seen among the ruins.

UDAWALAWE NATIONAL PARK

Stretching across the southern lowlands of Sri Lanka, the Udawalawe National Park has gained fame among travellers for its large herds of elephants that can easily be spotted meandering through the reserve. There is a distinct lack of forest cover at the Udawalawe Park, meaning that the landscape is rather barren during the dry season - perfect for spotting wildlife and not just large animals like elephants. Once the rain comes, the park undergoes a metamorphosis into an oasis of vivid green, peppered with sparkling lagoons and waterholes. While the main draw of this park is its elephants, a number of other animals can be found here, including buffalo, monkeys, leopards, sambar deer and crocodiles. This park is also home to the Elephant Transit Home, an orphanage for elephants who need to be supervised as they grow and develop before being released back into the wild. After release, they continue to be monitored until they have fully adapted to their new habitat.Udawalawe National Park
