There's a place off Sri Lanka's northern coast that's part nature reserve, part ancient legend, and honestly, still not fully understood.

Adam's Bridge Marine National Park stretches out from Mannar Island toward India - a run of limestone shoals, sandy islets, and shallow turquoise water that only became an official national park in 2015.
Underneath the surface, coral reefs and long stretches of seagrass quietly support more life than you'd expect from water this shallow: fish, sea turtles, dolphins, even the endangered dugong. The sandbanks above water matter too - for migratory birds passing through, this is one of the few places to rest along the way.

What really sets this place apart, though, is the story behind it. In the Ramayana, this same chain of shoals is called Rama Sethu — the bridge said to have been built to reach Lanka. And geologically, there's real evidence it was once exactly that: a land connection joining Sri Lanka and India, before the sea eventually took it back.

Every year, as the waters of Minneriya's ancient tank recede, something remarkable begins. The exposed grasslands become a meeting ground for wild elephants arriving from the surrounding forests, creating one of Sri Lanka's most extraordinary wildlife spectacles.

But The Gathering is more than a spectacular sight for us to witness. For the elephants, this is simply part of their natural rhythm — a time to feed, socialise, raise their young and move freely through a landscape they have used for generations.

If we are fortunate enough to witness them, we are visitors in their world. Give them space. Keep your distance. Let them move, feed and gather without interference.

Because the real beauty of seeing wild elephants is not getting as close as possible.
It is seeing them remain wild. 🐘🌿

A wonderful day of wildlife at Wilpattu National Park.

A lovely family from the Czech Republic recently spent a day at Wilpattu, experiencing the park's nature, wildlife, and quiet serenity firsthand.

Langurs watched from the trees, a family of spotted deer stayed alert nearby, and white-throated kingfishers added flashes of colour along the way. Above it all, the crested serpent eagle — one of the forest's true masters of the sky — kept watch. Painted storks stayed busy feeding their chicks, while elephants moved calmly along the water's edge.

And just when the day seemed complete, a crocodile appeared, resting quietly in the middle of it all.

Circular Relic Chamber - Polonnaruwa

Standing within the Sacred Quadrangle of Polonnaruwa, the Vatadage (circular relic chamber) is one of the finest surviving examples of ancient Sri Lankan circular architecture.

Built during the flourishing 12th-century Polonnaruwa Kingdom, this sacred structure was designed to enshrine and honor a Buddhist relic. Its circular terraces, four seated Buddha statues and beautifully carved moonstones, guardstones and stone steps demonstrate the remarkable craftsmanship of medieval Sri Lankan artisans.

The exact origins of the monument remain debated, with its construction and later development associated with King Parakramabahu I and King Nissankamalla.

Today, the Vatadage stands among the ruins of Polonnaruwa's ancient capital, offering a glimpse into a period when faith, art and architecture came together to shape one of Sri Lanka's greatest historic cities.

Kandy Esala Perehara - 2026

The Esala Perahera is held each year in honor of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, enshrined at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy. Tradition holds that the relic was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century by Prince Dantha and Princess Hemamala, smuggled in secret during a time of conflict in India. It has remained one of the most sacred objects in the Buddhist world ever since.

The procession itself traces back even further, to ancient ceremonies once held to call for rainfall and blessings upon the kingdom. Its modern form — the grand procession of drummers, dancers, fire-performers and decorated elephants recognized today — took shape in the 18th century under King Kirti Sri Rajasinghe, who first ordered the Sacred Tooth Relic to be carried in public procession.

This year's festival unfolds across two phases: the Kumbal Perahera (August 18–22) and the Randoli Perahera (August 23–27), each night growing grander with more elephants, dancers and traditional performers. The Grand Randoli Procession on August 27 marks the most spectacular night of the festival, before celebrations close at dawn on August 28 with the Diya Kepeema, a water-cutting ceremony held at the Mahaweli River.

Kandy has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, in part because of traditions like this one — observed continuously for well over a thousand years, even though colonial rule.

Sri Lanka is an island that holds everything in one country.
Beyond the wildlife, the culture, the centuries of history — its coastline is a story all its own.

The south and west coasts — Mirissa, Ahangama, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna — come alive from December to April, when seas are calm and skies clear. Mirissa draws whale and dolphin watchers, plus golden sand and sunset cafés. Ahangama offers consistent surf breaks and a glimpse of traditional stilt fishermen at work.

Hikkaduwa's coral sanctuary makes it a snorkeling and diving favorite, with a livelier, party-ready energy after dark. Unawatuna's sheltered horseshoe bay suits families and beginner swimmers, while Tangalle and the hidden Silent Beach near Mirissa reward those chasing quiet.

The east coast runs on the opposite calendar, best from May to September. Arugam Bay is its centerpiece — a world-renowned surf break paired with a relaxed, backpacker atmosphere, nearby lagoons, and wildlife-rich national parks.

Trincomalee and Pigeon Island add strong diving and snorkeling further north.
Wherever you land, whatever month you choose - one of Sri Lanka's coasts is always waiting, in season, for you.
