Oh, sweet rambutan!

The beautiful rambutan, not to be mistaken for lychee.

Despite being similar, the hairy rambutan is sweet and lovely in its own right. Rambutan has the same name in many languages, and originally comes from the word rambut which in Malay means hair.

The Rambutan is rich in vitamins A, B and C. and also contains iron, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, zinc and magnesium. Rambutans are also a good source of the natural sugars sucrose and fructose and low in fat.

Rambutan curry, Rambutan Juice, Rambutan mojito are some of the delights that can be made from Rambutan. And they’re great to have in your vehicle while driving across the island...

A sloth bear mother on the move, with her cub hitching a ride — before the little one heads off on its own adventure.

Sri Lanka’s sloth bears are one of Yala National Park’s less frequently seen residents, making an encounter like this particularly special. They’re mostly solitary animals, but cubs remain with their mothers until they’re ready for independence — often travelling on her back when young.

What a find!

Tucked away in the hills near Kalutara, Glenross Living is one of those Sri Lankan stays that deserves to be better known.

At its heart is a beautifully restored tea planter’s bungalow dating back to 1876, surrounded by a 90-acre estate of tea, rubber and cinnamon. There are just three suites in the original house and seven spacious contemporary villas, each with its own private pool and views across the surrounding countryside.

Add a spa, yoga, estate walks and a strong focus on wellness, and you have somewhere that feels wonderfully removed from everything — yet it’s only around 40 minutes inland from Kalutara and easily reached from the Southern Expressway.

What a find, indeed. 🇱🇰

Ambalangoda, on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast, is the heartland of one of the island’s most distinctive traditional crafts — mask making.

Hand-carved from lightweight local timber and painted in vivid colours, these masks are far more than decorative objects. For generations they have played a part in Sri Lankan folk drama, dance and traditional rituals, with different designs representing particular characters, spirits and stories.

The craft has traditionally been passed down through families, with Ambalangoda remaining one of the best places to see artisans at work and learn the meaning behind the extraordinary faces.

A colourful tradition — and a fascinating piece of Sri Lanka’s living cultural heritage.
