The Travel Concierge Sri Lanka

The Travel Concierge Sri Lanka The Travel Concierge Sri Lanka (TTCSL) is striving to be one of the most innovative travel brands in Laahiru Jayamanne

I believe The Traveler inside me was born the same day I was born. Since the time I remember, I have always made it a point to travel to places where I have discovered traveling is all about “experiencing things from one’s seventh sense” which I call the travel X factor. One can spend millions of dollars, cross seven seas and travel the whole world but yet miss that X factor while one can discover

it with a travel to Timbaktu, sit with a gang of locals, listen to the music of a Kora (a guitar like instrument with 21 strings) and taste their three rounds of special tea which symbolizes, cleansing, love and pleasure.

Artist creating new relief (sculptural technique where the sculpted elements remain attached to a solid background of the same material) sculptures in the Wewurukannala Vihara temple, which is most famous for a gargantuan seated Buddha waiting to greet devout pilgrims.
Wewurukannala Vihara is one of the island’s more unusual temple experiences — famous for its towering Buddha statue, vivid murals and the slightly surreal “tunnel of hell” visitors walk through before reaching the upper temple.
Located near Dikwella on the south coast, it’s still an active place of worship and offers a very local, very Sri Lankan experience that feels worlds away from curated tourist attractions.

Charith & the team successfully relocated two Green Sea Turtle nests during the final stretch of nesting season on Sri Lanka’s south coast 🐢🌊
In total, 240 eggs were carefully protected and relocated, with hatchlings expected in around two months — a small but important step in supporting one of the island’s most endangered marine species.
The Travel Concierge Sri Lanka is proud to support Galbokka Sea Turtle Conservation & Research Centre — a genuinely community-focused conservation project centred on turtle protection, research and education rather than commercial gain or tourist kickbacks.

Commuter rail around Colombo is heavily used by daily workers, particularly on routes between Panadura, Veyangoda and Negombo. While trains can be crowded and relatively slow, they remain one of the most atmospheric and affordable ways to travel around Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s rail network is centred around Colombo, with Colombo Fort Railway Station acting as the country’s main railway hub. Opened in 1917, the station handles both long-distance and commuter services and sees millions of passengers each year. Most major train routes begin or terminate here.
The Sri Lankan rail system dates back to the British colonial era, originally built to transport tea, coffee and rubber from the hill country to Colombo’s port. Today the network stretches roughly 1,450 km across the island with around 375 stations.
Interestingly, Colombo once had a tram network operating from 1900 until 1960, before it was dismantled as road transport became dominant.

Sri Lanka’s fishing communities are part of the island’s everyday rhythm — long before sunrise, boats head out while nets are repaired, sorted and prepared back on shore. From Negombo’s lagoon edge to the southern coast, fishing remains a livelihood shaped by weather, teamwork and generations of knowledge passed down through families.
Tourism can help support Sri Lanka’s fishing communities by creating demand for locally caught seafood, family-run stays, markets, boat trips and other small businesses connected to coastal life. In places like Negombo, fishing and tourism exist closely alongside one another, with many travellers experiencing daily life around the lagoon and shoreline. While tourism does not remove the challenges fishermen face — including fuel costs, weather and changing fish stocks — thoughtful, locally focused travel can help spread income more directly through these communities.

Sri Lankan pork curry is one of Sri Lanka’s richest and most intensely spiced curries — typically dark, peppery, smoky and slow-cooked until the meat becomes tender and coated in roasted spices. Black pepper, roasted curry powder, goraka or tamarind, curry leaves and chilli all play a major role, giving it a deeper, earthier flavour profile than many other Sri Lankan curries.
While pork isn’t commonly eaten by large parts of the population due to religious and cultural reasons — there are still strong pork-cooking traditions in certain regions and communities across the island.
You’ll often find standout versions around places like Habarana, the western coast, parts of the south and in village-style home cooking, where recipes are passed down through generations rather than formal restaurants. It’s commonly served with rice, pol sambol, mallung or even hopper-style breakfasts the next morning.

Time for another game of carrom.
Carrom is played using small disks of wood or plastic known as carrom men and follows similar “strike and pocket” games, like pool, with its use of rebounds, angles, and obstruction of opponent’s carrom pieces.
Fine-grained powder is often used on the board to enable the pieces to slide easily.
Serious carrom tournaments may have begun in Sri Lanka in 1935 but by 1958, both India and Sri Lanka had formed official federations of carrom clubs, sponsoring tournaments and awarding prizes.

The Vedda are a minority indigenous group of people in Sri Lanka who, among other self-identified native communities such as Coast Veddas, Anuradhapura Veddas and Bintenne Veddas, have indigenous status in the country.
The Veddha tribe in Sri Lanka is in threat of becoming extinct.
It has been hypothesized that the Vedda were probably the earliest inhabitants of Sri Lanka and have lived on the island since before the arrival of Vijaya and his clan from India.
You are able to positively contribute and learn more from, Uruwrige Wannila Aththo, the leader of the tribe at Dambana Vaddha Village, while having an educational visit to them near the Maduru Oya Wildlife Reservation.
Ask the team at The Travel Concierge for more details on this fascinating part of our national heritage.

🦩Pink flamingos are one of Sri Lanka’s more unexpected seasonal visitors. Each year, thousands of Greater Flamingos migrate long distances to the island’s northern wetlands, with Mannar becoming one of the best places to see them.
The migration season typically runs from around November through to April, with large flocks often seen between December and March. Areas around Adam’s Bridge, Giant’s Tank and the Vankalai Sanctuary regularly attract birdwatchers and photographers during this period, and recent 2026 sightings in Mannar have again seen impressive numbers arriving in the region. 🦩

Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine focused on balancing the body, mind and environment through diet, herbal remedies and therapeutic treatments.
In Sri Lanka, it’s been part of everyday life for over 2,000 years — not a trend, just tradition. You’ll find qualified Ayurvedic doctors, locally grown medicinal herbs and oils, and treatments that are tailored rather than one-size-fits-all.
It goes well beyond a spa massage — think prescribed therapies, herbal steam treatments and routines designed to restore balance.

Set within the historic Galle Fort, Amangalla is a heritage Aman property blending colonial-era architecture with understated luxury, offering a calm, old-world base in the heart of the fort. Wellness is centred around “The Baths,” with an in-house Ayurvedic doctor, personalised treatments, hydrotherapy and yoga, focusing on restoring balance rather than quick fixes — a refined, unhurried stay where history and holistic wellbeing come together.

One of our ‘top finds’ for last year was Sama Retreats 👌🏼
Tucked away on a quiet stretch of Sri Lanka’s south coast, Sama Retreats is all about stepping out of the noise and into something slower.🏝️
Set in Kosgoda, this beachfront boutique wellness retreat keeps things intentionally low-key — a handful of rooms, open space, and the kind of seclusion that’s getting harder to find. Days here lean into routine: ocean swims, yoga, Ayurvedic treatments, and long, uninterrupted stretches of time.
The design is a standout — a refined boutique aesthetic that stays true to Sri Lanka, with natural materials, clean lines, and a calm, grounded feel throughout 💜
We discovered Sama Retreats while visiting our preferred turtle conservation, Galbokka Sea Turtles is small, locally run initiative is a genuine conservation project — focused on protecting nests, rehabilitating injured turtles, and safe releases, not a large-scale commercial operation. 🐢

Sri Lanka doesn’t do just one season of festivals — it runs year-round, shaped by Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian calendars, often side by side.
Thaipusam is one of the most visually striking — held Jan/Feb on the full moon, honouring Lord Murugan, where devotees carry kavadi and may undertake acts of penance like body piercing after days of fasting and prayer.
