The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is celebrated throughout the island of Sri Lanka and marks new beginnings, prosperity, and unity.

Families observe rituals at astrologically chosen times. 'Lighting the hearth', 'cooking kiribath' (Milk Rice), and performing 'hisa thel gaama', the anointing of oil believed to bring health and blessings.

The festive table features 'kiribath' as the first meal, along with sweet treats like 'kokis', 'aluwa', 'mung kavum', 'kewum', and 'athirasa', each symbolizing joy and abundance.
