This is Part 2 of common problems often asked by travelers.

These are some of the most frequent itinerary questions I see in travel groups 👇

1️⃣ “What’s the best itinerary for 7–10 days in Sri Lanka?”

For a first visit, most travelers follow this popular route:

📍 Cultural Triangle — Sigiriya / Dambulla / Minneriya
📍 Hill Country — Kandy → Nuwara Eliya → Ella
📍 South Coast Beaches — Mirissa / Unawatuna / Bentota

✅ Tip: Don’t try to cover the whole country in one trip. Sri Lanka looks small on the map, but travel times are slow due to road conditions and traffic.

2️⃣ “Which beaches are best to visit?”

It depends heavily on the season 👇

☀️ Nov–April (South & West coast best)
• Mirissa
• Unawatuna
• Bentota
• Hikkaduwa

🌊 May–Sept (East coast best)
• Arugam Bay
• Pasikudah
• Nilaveli

✅ Tip: Always check monsoon patterns before booking your beach stay.

3️⃣ “Can I see elephants or leopards easily?”

Sri Lanka is amazing for wildlife, but sightings are never guaranteed.

🐘 Best for elephants:
• Udawalawe National Park
• Minneriya National Park (The Gathering season)

🐆 Best for leopards:
• Yala National Park

✅ Tip: Morning safaris usually give better chances than afternoon ones.

4️⃣ “Is the Kandy to Ella train ride worth it?”

👉 Short answer: YES — but plan smart.

Why travelers love it:
• Tea plantation views 🌿
• Mountain scenery

⚠️ Reality check:
• Tickets sell out fast in peak season
• Trains can be crowded

✅ Pro tip: Reserve seats early or consider boarding from Nanu Oya or Haputale if Kandy seats are full.

🚗 Common Travel Questions: Getting Around in Sri Lanka – Part 1

Most common problems travelers often ask before visiting Sri Lanka. This is Part 1: Transportation & Getting Around. If anything is wrong, please let me know! 😊

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions I see in travel groups:

1️⃣ Public Transport
• “Is it easy to get around by bus or train?”
Yes! Trains are scenic, especially the Kandy–Ella route, and buses are cheap and widely available, but expect crowds during peak times.

2️⃣ Taxis & Rideshare
• “Are Uber and Pickme available?”
They are mostly in Colombo and a few big towns. Outside that, tuk-tuks and private drivers are the go-to options.

3️⃣ Tuk-tuks
• “Are tuk-tuks expensive?”
It depends. Always agree on a fare before the ride! Using apps like PickMe or haggling a fair price can save you money.

4️⃣ Car/Scooter Rentals
• “Can I safely rent a car or scooter?”
Yes, but roads can be challenging with traffic, narrow streets, and sometimes aggressive driving. Always wear helmets and drive cautiously.

5️⃣ Tips for Travelers
• Have a local SIM for navigation and ride-hailing.
• Plan extra time for travel distances might be short, but roads can be slow.
• Please don’t trust Google Maps time estimates—they’re often way off!
• Ask locals for recommended transport options, they usually know the best routes.

Beautiful and very iconic coastal scene from Sri Lanka 🌊🇱🇰.

The photographs captures stilt fishermen perched on slender wooden poles in the shallow waters near the shore. This traditional fishing method, known as “stilt fishing”, is unique to Sri Lanka and is practiced mostly along the southern coast in places like Koggala, Ahangama, and Weligama. Fishermen balance skillfully on crossbars tied to vertical poles, casting their lines into the sea while waves crash beneath them.

Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, Sri Lanka will surprise you every time with its warm smiles, breathtaking views, and delicious food. Here are some practical tips to make your journey smooth and memorable:

🌞 Best Time to Visit

West & South Coast – December to April (perfect for beach days and whale watching).

East Coast – May to September (ideal for sunshine & calm seas).

💰 Money Matters

Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).

ATMs are widely available across the island.

Most hotels, restaurants, and shops accept cards, but always carry some cash for small purchases, tuk-tuks, and rural markets.

🍛 Food & Drinks

Try local favourites: kottu, hoppers, fresh seafood, and tropical fruits like mango & mangosteen.

Most street food is safe if cooked fresh and served hot.

Drink bottled water or boiled water—avoid tap water.

📱 Stay Connected

Get a local SIM (Dialog or Mobitel) at the airport—affordable data and great coverage.

🙏 Cultural Etiquette

Dress modestly for temples (cover shoulders and knees).

Remove shoes and hats before entering religious sites.

A small donation is appreciated at some temples.

🌴 Nature & Wildlife
