This picture from the NASA space shuttle shows an ancient bridge between India and Sri Lanka. It is a chain of limestone shoals, between Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, off the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and Mannar Island, off the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. The bridge is 30 km / 19 miles long. It was reportedly passable on foot up to the 15th century until storms deepened the channel: temple records seem to say that Rama’s Bridge was completely above sea level until it broke in a cyclone in AD 1480.

** Age **
Investigation by the Centre for Remote Sensing (CRS) of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, led by Professor S.M. Ramasamy dates the structure to 3,500 years. In the same study, carbon dating of some ancient beaches between Thiruthuraipoondi and Kodiyakarai shows the Thiruthuraipoondi beach dates back to 6,000 years and Kodiyakarai around 1,100 years ago. Another study suggests that the appearance of the reefs and other evidence indicate their recency, and a coral sample gives a radiocarbon age of 4,020±160 years BP
The discovery of the bridge is strengthening the record contained in the ancient books of the Ramayana (about Rama and Sita). From the shape and composition, the bridge is not made because of natural events, but rather the result of man-made. The discovery of this bridge will be a crucial aspect for the confirmation of the Ramayana legend that is expected to occur at the time of Tredha Yuga. In the legend of the Ramayana, it is mentioned that the bridge was built from India by the human ape (Vanara) to Sri Lanka over the command of Rama. This bridge used by Rama to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana.

** Demolition? **
In 2001, the Government of India approved a multi-million dollar Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project that aims to create a ship channel across the Palk Strait by dredging the shallow ocean floor near Dhanushkodi. The channel is expected to cut over 400 km off the voyage around the island of Sri Lanka. This proposed channel's current alignment requires dredging through Rama's Bridge, a proposal, which was met with strong opposition by the Hindus of India.
However, an article from November 2014 announced that RAMA SETHU won’t be demolished.

** RAMAYANA **
The Ramayana is one of the two great Indian epics, the other being the Mahabharata. The Ramayana tells about life in India around 1000 BCE and offers models in dharma. The hero, Rama, lived his whole life by the rules of dharma; in fact, that was why Indian consider him heroic. When Rama was a young boy, he was the perfect son. Later he was an ideal husband to his faithful wife, Sita, and a responsible ruler of Aydohya. "Be as Rama," young Indians have been taught for 2,000 years; "Be as Sita."
