Poson Full Moon Poya Day in 2026 falls on Monday, June 29, 2026. It is a national public and bank holiday in Sri Lanka, commemorating the historic introduction of Buddhism to the island in the 3rd century BC.

The day marks the historic meeting of the Indian missionary monk Mahinda (son of Emperor Ashoka) and King Devanampiyatissa at Mihintale.

Mihintale is widely regarded as the "cradle of Buddhism" in Sri Lanka, where the first Buddhist sermon on Sri Lankan soil was preached.

Thousands of devotees in white robes make pilgrimages to Anuradhapura and climb to the summit of Mihintale to observe religious practices, listen to sermons, and read holy texts.
